West Bengal Likely to Introduce Cyber Crime Course at UG Level

The State Higher Education Department of West Bengal has been directed by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to launch courses on Cyber Crime at Under Graduate (UG) level. The state government is looking for skilled and qualified professionals to work in areas related to cybercrime detection. At present, the state lacks skilled professionals in cybercrime detection.

The state government can fill the gap only by introducing courses on cybercrime at UG level and spreading awareness. Already, the state government has initiated the process of setting up ‘Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security’.

The IT Department of West Bengal has been given the responsibility of setting up ‘Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security’. The Higher Education Department of the state will take the help of IT Department in farming the syllabus of cybercrime courses. These courses will be beneficial to students aspiring to get jobs in cyber crime department and associated fields.

Cyber Security and Cyber Crime courses are slowly gaining momentum in India. Recently, the University of Delhi launched PG Diploma in Cyber Security and Law. The varsity does not conduct an entrance exam for PGD in Cyber Security course and the admission is based on merit, i.e., percentage scored in B.Tech/ B.Sc/ BCA.

Recently, NITI Aayog recommended the central government to hire M.Tech/ B.Tech graduates from IITs and MCA graduates as cybercrime investigators. The highest policy-making body of India recommended that these graduates can be appointed as Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors in the state cyber crime investigation departments.
