Amidst rows of discrepancies in conducting the NEET exam yearly and the disruption caused by the pandemic has highlighted concerns.

Over 15 lakh students appear for the NEET UG exam every year to take admission into medical courses. The authorities conducting the exams have felt that it becomes difficult to manage the exam on a large scale. The exam has also been embroiled by PILs, disputes in question papers and answers. and scandals with allegations of graft.

There were reports of impersonators targeting vulnerable students and their families in shedding lakhs and crores to promise a seat through NEET. These have put undue pressure on students and undermined the fairness of the exam.

The exam is also affected by burgeoning coaching culture that has made it an affair only accessible to the elite according to a study conducted by the High Court of Tamil Nadu. It is the responsibility of the state to ensure a basic need such as education is universally accessible and it does not become exclusive.

It has been found that students who took admission after clearing NEET counselling 2020 underperformed if compared with students who got admitted based on class 12th marks.

In the light of the abovementioned circumstances, appeals are being made to conduct the exam biannually. The Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education had will be soon contemplating whether to conduct the exam twice a year. A student gets only one attempt in a year to clear NEET.

According to GOQii, 43% of Indians are suffering from depression. Several students reportedly committed suicide because of social and economic pressure. Students often feel stigmatised if they are not able to clear the exam on the first attempt.

The demand of conducting the exam twice each year seems appropriate and it appears that it would be prudent to do so. It will give students relief, but it will not be easier to conduct the most coveted medical entrance exam of India two times a year.
