An initiative supported by Google and titled Women Engineers Programme (WE) has been introduced for addressing the gender imbalance in the technology sector. Women in Software Engineering (abbreviated as WISE) is a diversity programme that has produced promising female engineers that were selected from tier 2 colleges in the previous years.

After having a look at the past record, an onsite and online platform providing disruptive programmes, TalentSprint has agreed to nurture about 600 women engineers of India in the coming three years via WE.

Students will be picked via a pan India selection process and then they will be groomed through a training that will be of a year’s duration. They will also each receive an annual stipend of Rs. 1 lakh.

The students belonging to the third year or the fourth year of engineering will be considered eligible for this programme. It will consist of live online classes, summer coding boot camps, certification and team-based projects, ongoing mentorship, etc. that will hone their computational thinking and problem-solving abilities.

The co-founder and CEO of TalentSprint, Santanu Paul, said that the selected students will receive training from female mentors from India and the US. 100 women are to be trained in the first year, which will be followed by 200 and 300 women being trained in the second year and third year respectively. When the programme ends, all the top performers will be able to sit for interviews in the Google ecosystem.

Paul further added that despite being a pilot programme, WISE produced over 180 women engineers who went on to get recruited by about 80 companies from all around the world. This lead Google to support them when the officials saw the case study.

The Engineering Director of Google India, Anand Rangaraj, said that it is critical to include women for creating technology products of universal relevance. They are dedicated to facilitating socioeconomic and gender diversity among software engineers.
