4,000 Women-Only Higher Educational Institutions Operational in the Country: HRD

According to the HRD Ministry, there are a total of 4,219 women-only higher education institutions and universities across the country. Satya Pal Singh, Union Minister of State for HRD informed the same in Lok Sabha.
He informed that the total number of women’s higher education and universities functioning across the country in the field of arts and humanities, science, commerce and medicine is over 4,000. The maximum number of women-only higher education institutions are in Uttar Pradesh, followed by Rajasthan (843) and Tamil Nadu (383).
He further informed that the government is taking several initiatives to upgrade the existing model degree colleges, colleges, and autonomous colleges to universities, including women universities. The same will be carried out through centrally sponsored RUSA scheme. Apart from this government is also sponsoring and supporting the construction of hostels under the equity initiative of the RUSA scheme.

Meanwhile, MHRD has come up with new portals IMPRESS and SPARC. The aim of the scheme is to build a research ecosystem in higher educational institutions and universities in the country. The prime focus of the government is to launch relevant research projects and have academic collaborations to promote quality education. The total amount allotted by the government for the implementation of the respective scheme is around 418 crores for over 600 joint research projects.
