Yoga Courses and Institutes in India to Get NAAC Accreditation
NAAC is framing a policy to grant accreditation to Yoga courses and Yoga institutes in India. NAAC has come up with a draft policy that consists of rules & regulations, parameters etc. for granting accreditation to Yoga courses.
The demand for the Yoga courses has been increasing across the country. Considering the rising demand for Yoga courses in India, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NACC) has decided to grant accreditation to Yoga courses and institutes that offer short-term or long-term courses in the field. NAAC has come up with a draft policy that consists of rules & regulations, parameters etc. for granting accreditation to Yoga courses.
The following key indicators will be given weightage for granting accreditation to Yoga courses –
- Alignment of vision
- Mission
- Objectives
- Activities of the Yoga Department in the concerned institute/university
- Curriculum
- The outcome of Yoga Courses
- Programmatic Foundation (based on authentic yogic principles)
- Benefits of traditional teachers
- Do Yoga educators/teachers practice Yoga themselves?
Apart from the above key indicators, institutes aspiring for NAAC accreditation for its Yoga courses must have approval/ recognition by a central or state government department/ private universities.
According to the official data of the National Health Portal of India, there are 17 Yoga institutes in India, which are recognised by the central government. Last year, UGC approved the curriculum for mainstream education in Yoga.

So far, the central government has shortlisted six Yoga institutes to offer a wide range of courses such as PGD in Yoga, Ph.D., M.Sc, B.Sc, Yoga Therapy and Certificate course. Short-term courses or certificate courses are applicable for both teachers and students.
The process of granting accreditation to Yoga courses and institutes by NAAC will begin soon.
