Centre to Establish Yoga Departments at 6 Central Universities
MHRD is planning to establish yoga departments in the 6 selected central universities across the country. The new yoga departments will offer undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in yoga education.
The central government has identified six central universities that will have a yoga department. According to the reports, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has appointed a committee which will work on making recommendations and designing a curriculum on Yoga Education in the universities. Once that is done, it is only then that the University Grants Commission will promote these five yoga courses.
Meanwhile, Satya Pal Singh informed that the committee for this purpose is working under the chairpersonship of Prof HR Nagendra who is the Chancellor for Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana Bengaluru.

New Yoga Courses:
The five new yoga courses and their duration is listed below:
- B.Sc Yoga: 3-6 Years
- Postgraduate Diploma in Yoga: 1-2 Years
- Postgraduate Diploma in Yoga Therapy: 1-2 Years
- Master of Science (M.Sc) Yoga: 2-4 Years
- Doctorate of Philosophy (Yoga), Ph.D. (Yoga): According to the UGC guidelines for Ph.D
The six central universities identified by the Centre for the establishment of the Yoga Departments include the Central University of Rajasthan, Central University of Kerala, Manipur University, Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Visva Bharti Shantiniketan and Indira Gandhi National Tribal University.

Also, the Ministry of AYUSH said that the centre has no role to play in the education and practice of yoga and naturopathy system. They have taken up the issue of granting central registration to Bachelors of Naturopathy and Yogic Science through the medium of Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy.
