Professors at Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya use a grading system based on credits, scored on a scale of 10. This system assesses how well students perform, taking into account both their credits earned and their grades. Let's delve into how the RGPV Grading System works.
RGPV Grading System

RGPV Grading System: Established under the Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Act 13 of 1998, Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (RGPV) is a technical university. It holds approval from the UGC and has been accredited with an A+ by NAAC. RGPV grading system for the academic year 2024 operates on a credit-based model. It evaluates students' marks based on the percentage they achieve in their exams. For instance, a student scoring between 91-100% receives a grade point of 10, equivalent to an A+ grade. The grading scale remains consistent for both theoretical and practical assessments. Here’s everything you need to know about the RGVP Grading System.

In the RGVP Grading System, every student in a program will get a grade from their teacher or the faculty member in charge of that subject. The grades depend on how well students do in various tests, homework, quizzes, labs, internships, classwork, and midterms, and how regularly they attend class.

To introduce new courses, the respective Board of Studies must propose them. These proposals need approval from both the Academic Council and the Executive Council, including details like units and credits. Each semester should only include approved courses.

Students' progress will be assessed through various means like tutorials, practicals, assignments, tests, fieldwork, seminars, internships, quizzes, and exams. These assessment methods are determined by the relevant Board of Studies and endorsed by the Academic Council and Executive Council of the University.

How is the RGPV Grade Sheet Calculated?

Here's how the RGPV  grade sheet is calculated that evaluates your overall performance:

  • Marks and Grading Scale: Throughout the semester, you earn marks from various components like theory exams, practical exams, assignments, and quizzes. RGPV follows a 10-point grading scale, where each range of grades corresponds to a specific letter grade.
  • Credits and Grade Points: Every course has a certain number of credits, showing its importance in your program. Your letter grade in a course is matched with a grade point on a scale of 1 to 10.
  • Weighted Grade Point Calculation: Since courses carry different credit weights, your performance in each course is weighted accordingly. To calculate this, multiply the grade point you earn in a course by the number of credits it carries.
  • Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA): Your SGPA reflects your performance in a specific semester. To find it, add the weighted grade points for all courses in that semester and divide the total by the number of credits taken.
  • Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) : Your CGPA shows overall academic performance across all semesters. To get this, sum up the weighted grade points from all semesters and divide them by the total number of credits taken throughout your program.

Example

Let's say you take three subjects in a semester:

  • Subject A: 4 credits, Grade Point earned = 8
  • Subject B: 3 credits, Grade Point earned = 7
  • Subject C: 5 credits, Grade Point earned = 9

Weighted Grade Points Calculation:

  • Subject A: 8 (Grade Point) * 4 (Credits) = 32
  • Subject B: 7 (Grade Point) * 3 (Credits) = 21
  • Subject C: 9 (Grade Point) * 5 (Credits) = 45

Total Weighted Grade Points = 32 + 21 + 45 = 98

Total Credits = 4 + 3 + 5 = 12

SGPA for the semester = Total Weighted Grade Points (98) / Total Credits (12) = 8.17

Let’s assume that the previous semester’s SGPA is 7.91.

CGPA for the year = (7.91 + 8.17) / 2 = 8.04.

Overall, when you understand how the RGPV Grading System works, you gain insight into what your grades mean and how well you are doing academically. It is important to know that doing well in your internal assessments, practical exams, and theory courses is crucial for maintaining a solid CGPA.

FAQs

What happens to my CGPA at RGPV if I fail a subject?

Falling short in a course at RGPV could lower your CGPA, but the severity of the blow depends on both the credits tied to the failed course and your performance in other classes. Your CGPA is calculated by weighing grade points against credit values. So, if you fail in a course with a hefty credit value, it will pull down your CGPA more than failing a course with fewer credits.

How are internal assessments and practical exams considered in the RGPV grading system?

In different subjects and programs, the importance of internal assessments changes. Usually, it's between 20% to 50% of all the marks for that subject. Likewise, the significance of practical exams can differ based on the subject and program rules, typically falling between 20% to 50% of the total marks.

What is the minimum CGPA required for a degree at RGPV?

To earn a degree from RGPV or any of its affiliated institutions, you need to maintain a minimum CGPA of 5.0. This rule applies to both undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

How does RGPV calculate CGPA?

Your CGPA at RGPV is determined by considering both your grades and the credits of each subject. Every subject is assigned a credit value, like 4, and a grade point based on your marks. To calculate your CGPA, you multiply these values for each subject, add up the weighted grade points for all subjects, and then divide by the total credits.

What is the attendance rule at RGVP under the grading system?

If you are a regular student taking semester exams, you need to be present for at least 75% of the lectures and practical classes for each subject in your course. However, the department head can excuse a shortfall of up to 10%, and the vice-chancellor can excuse an additional 5%, if there's a valid reason.
