About PGIMER Chandigarh
The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) was founded in1962, on the vision of late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab, and the distinguished medical educationists of the then combined state of Punjab, with the support of India's first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, who saw scientific institutions as temples of learning and pilgrimages. The institute was founded in 1962, and on July 7, 1963, Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru opened the hospital that is currently known as "Nehru Hospital." The Institute was founded by the Government of Punjab, which was then undivided. In November 1966, the institute's administrative administration was transferred to the Union Territory of Chandigarh following the state's restructuring.
The university is regarded as one of India's best medical schools. Currently, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Indian Nursing Council, and the Government of India oversee the institution.
