Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) , a premier institution under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India has been renamed as Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology (CIPET). CIPET was established in 1968 by the Government of India and its Head Office is located in Chennai.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, the changed names of CIPET has been registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act 1975 ( Tamil Nadu Act 27 of 1975)

DV Sadananda Gowda, the minister under the Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers said that CIPET will now be able to fully focus on the petrochemical sector by providing quality academics, required skills, technical support and contribute in research work.
He further said that the primary objective of CIPET in the past years has been towards the growth of the plastic industry in India through education and research.
Throughout the years the institute has burgeoned and collaborated with industries to find innovative plastic-based solutions which were effective and marketable.
