  • UGC directed universities and affiliated colleges to make accreditation status available for public on their respective websites.
  • Institutes that are eligible and not applied for accreditation must also disclose their details on the official websites.
Higher Education Institutes Should Make Accreditation Status Public: UGC

With an intention to reform higher education in the country, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed all the higher learning/ educational institutes such as universities and affiliated colleges to make accreditation status public online, i.e., on their respective websites. The UGC further clarified that the institutes must disclose details even if they do not have a grade or accreditation.

Similarly, the details of accreditation must be mentioned in every material related to the concerned educational institution. Institutes that are eligible and not applied for accreditation must also disclose their details on the official websites, directed the UGC.

UGC has been taking extensive reforms to revamp and upgrade the higher education in the country. Earlier, UGC was successful in identifying fake universities across the country . The list of fake universities is available on the official website of UGC. It will help the students to avoid enrolling in such institutes.

Making accreditation status available on the official websites of respective universities and colleges will help the students to get an idea of quality education that is being delivered in these institutes. Students can make the right choice before joining a university or college. According to UGC, the performance of the institutes also matters.

Earlier, AICTE directed technical institutes to make accreditation status public . The council had also placed the list of fake universities on its website. AICTE has also decided to stop giving approval for new technical institutes in six states due to a huge number of seats lying vacant every year.
