ICSE Class 10 English Language Exam Pattern 2024: Unlike the English Literature subject, the paper for English Language is not textbook-based but rather based on writing skills, reading comprehension, and grammar knowledge. They syllabus for ICSE English Paper 1 is short and strictly defined. The paper for English Language will have five questions with the first three questions dedicated to writing skills. The fourth question will be unseen passage while the last question is designed to test the student’s knowledge of functional grammar, structure, and use of the language.

In Question 1, five option choices will be provided as (i) short story writing, (ii) experience-based question, (iii) state your view (for or against), (iv) situation-based question, and (v) picture-based question. In Question 2, students will either have to write a formal letter or an informal letter with option choices being provided for both. Thus, students can prepare well any one of these two letter writings. In Question 3, no option will be provided and both questions will have to be answered.
In Question 4, an unseen passage of about 450 words will be provided based on which objective as well as subjective questions will be asked. One sub-question will be long answer type with a weightage of 8 marks. Lastly, in Question 5, the grammar knowledge will be tested. There will be four sub-questions (all objective) with three questions of 4 marks weightage and one question with 8 marks weightage.
