The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has decided to implement the quota of Economically Weaker Section that has been approved by the Union Cabinet in January this year. IIM-C is one of the first top B-School to implement the EWS quota. They have announced that they will be providing 2% - 3% quota to the students this year in the MBA programme offered by the Institution from the upcoming academic year, i.e. 2019-20.
IIM-C has also announced that they will increase the total number of seats by 18, making the total number of seats at the Institution to 480 seats. According to the reports, IIM-C will eventually raise the total percentage of quota to 10% by the academic year 2021-23, as the total number of seats will also increase to a total of 578.
In order to increase the quota, IIM-C will have to increase the facilities that it provides to the students so as to accommodate more students at the Institution. Sources state that the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta will add more Hostels, classrooms as well as faculty offices as part of the academic infrastructure enhancement initiative. Sources state that the new hostel will accommodate a total of 300 students. IIM-C plans to begin the expansion programme this year.
The students who wish to avail the facility of the EWS quota will have to fill out the form that has been released by the Centre. However, the basic eligibility criteria that the students will have to meet in order to avail the EWS quota are:
- The Family of the candidate must have a total income of ₹8 Lakhs or less.
- If the candidate owns agricultural land, it should not larger than 5 acres in total.
- The candidate is eligible if they do not own an apartment bigger than 1000 sq. ft.
- The candidate must not own a residential plot larger than 100 sq. yards.
- Candidate must not own a plot larger than 200 sq. yards

An official from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has stated that the implementation of the EWS Quota will help bring more students to the institution to gain education from one of the top B-Schools in India.

Sources state that the last time that the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta had increased seats was to increase the number of seats to accommodate the candidates belonging to the OBC Category in 2008. Classes at IIM-C will begin in the month of June this year.
