National Testing Agency (NTA), which was approved by the Union Cabinet on November 10, 2017 , planned to conduct JEE advanced examination along with other entrance exams like NEET, JEE Main and others. However, the government has no authority to take a decision in this regard. Therefore, the government approached IITs with a proposal to let NTA hold JEE Advanced. Responding to the proposal, the premier technical institutes clarified that they were not in favour of allowing NTA conduct JEE Advanced.

A director of a top IIT revealed that the role of IITs is more in conducting JEE Advanced. Faculty from these premier institutes set the question paper. Moreover, conducting JEE Advanced is not a heavy burden to IITs. On the other hand, NTA would have to rely on IITs for setting question papers and reviewing the choice of centres. Therefore, it is better to allow only IITs to hold the premier engineering entrance exam, the Director clarified.

With the latest decision of IITs, there is a dilemma whether IIMs will allow NTA to hold Common Admission Test (CAT) or not. The decision of IITs might influence the decision of IIMs.
During the initial stages, NTA will conduct exams like NEET, UGC NET, CTET and JEE Main , which are being conducted by CBSE so far. Through this move, CBSE will be relieved from the burden of holding exams for various bodies.
NTA is expected to be functional from the next year and it might conduct NEET 2018.
