The decision taken by Jawaharlal Nehru University to scrap M.Phil/Ph.D. course received wide opposition from the students and teachers. A plea was also filed in High Court of Delhi against the varsity’s move. Now, the varsity has rolled back its decision to scrap Integrated M.Phil/ Ph.D. course and the students who qualified M.Phil will be allowed to take direct admission in the Ph.D. course. The JNU Entrance Exam is scheduled to begin from December 23, 2017 and the varsity has given clarification on Integrated M.Phil/Ph.D. course.
On December 21, 2017, the Directorate of Admissions at JNU issued an official notice stating that the terms and conditions for Integrated M.Phil/ Ph.D. course will be offered according to the prospectus. Aspirants felt a sigh of relief after the varsity’s clarification in this regard.

On December 13, 2017, JNU had released admit cards for JNU Entrance Exam. Students, who applied for Integrated M.Phil/Ph.D. course, were shocked after the varsity stated that the students would be considered only for the admission to M.Phil course and they need to sit for a separate entrance exam to join the Ph.D. course after the completion of M.Phil.
The varsity mentioned this condition in the admit card. Students criticised the move as authorities of varsity stated ‘Direct Ph.D.’ norm in the admission prospects. Students were disappointed with the sudden change in the admission norm.

Responding to the issue, the officials of the varsity claimed that the decision to scrap Integrated M.Phil/ Ph.D. course was taken during the Academic Council meeting. Contrastingly, teachers’ association clarified that no such decision was taken during the meeting and the decision of varsity is unilateral.
