The Government Medical Colleges in Tamil Nadu will soon enrol students in PG medical courses. The decision has been taken by the Medical Council of India (MCI) after the Tamil Nadu Government requested MCI to approve 157 postgraduate programme seats for the medical stream. 56 seats out of 157 are approved by the Council. The Council has also taken the decision to convert Post-graduate Diploma courses of the medical field into Post-graduate medical degree for the interested aspirants.
The total number of available seats in the Government Colleges of Tamil Nadu for the Post-graduate degree is 1,250. Government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu offer Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Science (MS) courses. Among these, 293 seats are for the PGDM medical programme. The 293 PGDM medical seats will be converted into PG medical degrees

The admission for these 56 seats will be conducted in the upcoming academic session of the Government Colleges of Tamil Nadu. The colleges have been asked to provide all the basic and necessary needs as required by the students. The requirements will also vary depending upon the needs of the new courses offered. The Medical Council of India as also asked to provide the adequate number of faculty members for the new courses along with the proper supply of technical support from the colleges offering these degrees.
Only a selected number of government medical colleges will offer PG medical courses. This selection will soulfully depend on the parameters set by the Government of Tamil Nadu. As per the need of the colleges and the new courses, each Government College will also be granted with sufficient funding from the Government of Tamil Nadu.
