Cotton College is regarded as the best college in Assam, and it offers only science and arts courses. Sources from Education Department opined that the government has to take the recommendation into consideration which is very crucial to the college. The college has been already undergoing a period of transition and introducing commerce stream at this juncture would be beneficial.
They further added that the government has to give serious consideration to NAAC recommendation as the upgradation of the college is under consideration. The government is planning to upgrade the college into university on the lines of Cuttack's Ravenshaw or Kolkata’s Presidency.

NAAC has also recommended reintroducing postgraduate courses at the college. In the year 2011, the college became a constituent of new Cotton College State University (CCSU). Since hen the postgraduate courses went under state university’s jurisdiction and reintroducing of postgraduate courses has become a problem. Shortage of faculty is also one of the problems which became a barrier for introducing postgraduate courses.
