The number of students pursuing Ph.D. courses at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has seen a huge jump. The Ph.D. students in 2001-02 across all the departments were 771, while the numbers increased to 3171 in 2018-19 in the last academic session. The Ph.D. enrollment at IIT Bombay has witnessed a surge by 311% from 2001 - 2018.
IIT Bombay has also witnessed a rise in the number of Ph.Ds produced every year. At the beginning of the decade, the number was only 173, and the number of Ph.Ds pass outs from this institute reached 380. Increase in funding from various sources besides government is one of the reasons for the surge in Ph.D. enrollments at IIT Bombay.
Different faculties of IIT Bombay are involved in sponsored projects with industries, and this has led to a rise in the level of research funding. IIT Bombay is also working on projects which can make a difference in society, and there has been a significant development in terms of producing cutting-edge technology in different fields.

IIT Bombay handed over degrees to 195 students on Saturday at the interim convocation. 118 Ph.D. students received degrees. Chairman of the Board of Governors, Dilip Sanghvi and IIT Bombay’s director Devang Khakhar attended the function.
