Request for setting up National Organic Farming Research Institute (NOFRI) in Gangtok, Sikkim has been approved by the Agriculture Ministry on 10th Feb’16, Wednesday .
This request was approved to extend research and technological support to organic farming systems in the country.
Sikkim was chosen for the institute as it is the only state in the country which has adopted organic farming on a universal basis.
The institute will impart vocational and advanced training for promotion of organic farming in the country. "Required financial resources, manpower and infrastructure facilities will be made available accordingly," the ministry said.
"The institute will undertake basic, strategic and adaptive research on efficient, economically viable and environmentally sustainable organic farming systems for improving productivity and quality of produce," a ministry statement said.
