The success rate of girl candidates who reached the final interview stage of the prestigious Civil Services Examination in 2019, in getting recommended to join the Civil Services by the UPSC, rose from 14.2% in 2018 to 14.6% in 2019. Meanwhile, only 7% of the total male candidates who appeared for the interview stage after clearing the mains exam 2019 were recommended for selection further i.e. less than the 7.9% male candidates recommended based on CSE-2018.

A higher number of women were selected as compared to men who qualified for the interview stage, cut across all categories like General, SC, ST, Other backward classes (OBS), and Economically Weaker Section (EWS). However, in the overall terms, the number of 1,510 female candidates who went for the interview stage as part of the CSE-2019 process was much higher than their 9,964 male counterparts. Out of these, 220 women were suggested for different civil services posts including IAS, IPS, IFS, etc., as compared to 702 successful male candidates.

According to UPSC's Annual Report for 2020-21 released last week, 55.5% of the candidates appeared for the preliminary exam in 2019, just 7.7% of the qualified candidates could clear the exam in their 1st attempt. Also, out of 922 candidates suggested for various posts in civil services based on CSE-2019, 63.1% were from engineering background (up from 62.7% in CSE-2018), 24.1% from humanities (reduced from 24.5% in 2018), 6.62% from science (reduced from 6.9% in 2018) and 6% from medical science(up from 5.9% in 2018).
