NMC Schedules NExT Exam for the First Half of 2023

Around mid-2021, NMC announced that the NExT examination, set to replace the FMGE exam soon, is scheduled to be held in the first half of 2023. To alleviate any doubts or concerns about the exam, the NMC stated that a mock test will be conducted sometime in 2022.

In 2021, the union health ministry stated that all efforts were being made to ensure that the National Exit Test, or NExT, is set to be conducted in the first half of 2023, according to the roadmap.

Further, the National Medical Commission announced that a mock run of the test was also planned to be conducted in 2022. Chairing the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at the time, Mansukh Mandaviya, sat in a review meeting with the National Medical Commission in June 2021.

In the meeting, discussion over the results of Steps 1 and 2 of the NExT will be used as qualification for the final exam in MBBS, receive the appropriate license to practice medicine as well as become eligible for PG seat allocation across different specialities.

In a statement from the government, the importance of NExT exams depends on the uniformity it will uphold for all, whether they receive training in India or abroad. Thus, solving the challenges arising for foreign medical graduates and in mutual recognition.

In his statements, Mandaviya reiterated the Indian Government’s commitment to achieving quality medical education and transparent exam infrastructure as well as health services.

Established under the National Medical Commission Act 2019, the objective of the NMC has been to improve access to quality and affordable medical education. Further, it ensures the availability of adequate and high-quality medical professionals across India, offering universal and equitable health care, reported sources.

With the establishment of the NMC, a host of several different functions was also brought in, which included developing policies to maintain high-quality and standard of education as well as to regulate medical institutions, professionals, and researchers. Further, the NMC must assess the healthcare requirements such as human resources for proper healthcare infrastructure as well as create a roadmap to achieve those requirements.

Moreover, the functions of the NMC would also include the promotion, coordination and formation of guidelines and policies to regulate the proper functioning of the medical regulatory bodies such as the commission itself, the State Medical Councils and the autonomous boards.
