Latest Update (April 18, 2022): The non-U.S. citizens or non-U.S. migrants travelling to the USA must update themselves with the current vaccination rules prevalent in the country.

  • The students and other travellers travelling to the U.S. must be fully vaccinated with a primary series of an accepted Covid-19 vaccine.
  • A negative Covid-19 report is mandatory or documentation of recovery from Covid-19.
  • Wearing a mask covering the nose and mouth is required in indoor areas of public transport.

(December 22, 2021): With the onset of the new Omicron variant, all international students travelling to the USA should meet certain conditions. From November 2021, the country has asked all international passengers including students to be vaccinated against Covid-19 with only approved vaccines.

The US Centre for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) has specified for double dose vaccines, the approved vaccine for Indians students is Moderna whereas for single dose vaccines, Jansen/Johnson & Johnson shall be accepted.

With regards to Covid-19 testing, the US requires passengers to get a Covid-19 viral test done irrespective of their vaccination status. The same shall be conducted no more than one day before they arrive in the country.

Passengers should also produce their negative Covid-19 report to the airline before they board the flight. In case one has recovered from Covid-19 recently, they must provide documentary proof of the same.

Upon arrival in the US, all international passengers will be tested with a viral test within the next three to five days. Even if the test comes out negative, they will have to self-isolate or quarantine for a full seven days from the date of arrival.

From India to the US, the flight time from New Delhi to New York is around 15 hours 30 months, only if it is a direct flight. Both direct and connecting flights to various US cities are currently available. These include United Airlines, Air India, and Emirates although Emirates would require passengers to halt in Dubai for up to 15 hours.

Baggage allowance for Air India economy seats is 25 kg while United Airlines allows 23 kg. The same shall vary depending on the airline, which should be checked before booking the flight. Masks are also compulsory throughout the flight.
