Graduate Aptitude Test - Biotechnology (GAT-B) is an all-India entrance test conducted annually to offer admissions to different courses in the department of biotechnology. The candidates through the GAT-B exam are selected for Junior Research Fellowship. GAT-B test is conducted for granting admission to the Department of Biotechnology supported Postgraduate programs in Biotechnology and allied areas in the participating institutions. The examination for GAT-B is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

GAT-B Overview

GAT-B exam for the year 2023 was conducted on May 13, 2023. The admit card for the same was also released by National Testing Agency (NTA), the conducting authority for the exam.

GAT-B exam is conducted yearly to grant admission in DBT-supported PG programmes such as MSc Biotechnology, MSc Agricultural Biotechnology, MVSc, MTech Biotechnology, and MSc in allied areas. Almost 1,221 seats are available in 34 participating institutes that offer admission in DBT-supported PG courses through GATE-B. GAT-B is a highly competitive exam in which several candidates appear each year. As candidates work diligently with all their earnest efforts it is important that they also know about the benefits of clearing GAT-B, a few of which are mentioned below:

  • Qualifying this exam with a decent score will allow the candidates to choose their desired institutes and courses for admission. However, it should also be noted that the various institutes would have the ability to determine the cutoffs for admission.
  • Candidates would be eligible for various fellowships and other similar rewards as various institutes offer the same.
  • After completing their desired postgraduate programs candidates would also have the option to go for higher studies from abroad. Some of the popular research institutes include Cambridge University, Oxford University, University of Pennsylvania, etc.

Scope after Clearing GAT-B

Candidates should also be aware of the opportunities they would have after clearing the GAT-B exam. A few of which would be discussed in this section below:

  • Candidates become eligible for various entrance examinations to pursue higher research. For instance, they can work as Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR-sponsored projects.
  • GAT-B can open gateways for candidates who want to pursue a career in research such as M.Phil or PhD degree and build a career in research.
  • Candidates become eligible to sit for various entrance examinations such as BHEL, IOCL, ONGC, etc. Most of such exams are for recruitment in various PSUs which provide good financial remuneration as well as various related perks to the candidates.
  • Candidates can venture into academic fields in the form of teaching assistants and work in faculty positions in various private as well as government colleges. 
  • With various DBT-supported PG programs candidates are exposed to different research facilities that can open further gateways for working with various international players after completing their post-graduation.
  • Candidates can also work as lab technicians, biotechnologists, research scientists, etc across various domains.
