Sports as a career prospect have started to grow. India having produced several sportspersons such as Saina Nehwal, Leander Paes, Abhinav Bindra, Sachin Tendulkar and Vishwanathan Anand. The parents, teachers, to a certain extent, give first priority to the textbook and the classroom knowledge. However, even today, sports, is given a secondary treatment when it comes to making it a profession in most of the parts of the country.
TNEA and Anna University
Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) had increased the number of the sports quota seats in the recent years.The colleges of the University offer and teach 51 different sporting, ranging from Athletics to Swimming.
This scheme has been introduced to recognize the talent of the students and hence give marks based only on merit.Twelve seats are with Anna University and the remaining four hundred and eighty-eight are with Anna University of Technologies, private and government aided engineering colleges.
Rizvi College, Mumbai
Based in Mumbai, Rizvi College offers aid in a number of sports disciplines. The students who apply through sports quota need to go through a set of stringent trials and the ones who pass the challenges are selected. The college administration tries to recognize the importance of sports and encourages the students to pursue it professionally.
SRM University - Tamil Nadu
SRM University has a reputation of awarding sports scholarships to more than hundred students in the recent years. The students availing the scholarships are spread across different disciplines such as management,engineering, technology, science and humanities etc.The annual budget for providing the scholarship to the student of various years is a sum of INR 7,00,00000. The criteria for selection are the fair trials conducted across various sports such as Basketball, Cricket, Volleyball, Hockey, Football, Badminton,Tennis,Table Tennis and Chess. The trials for the admission are scrutinized by the experts from inside and outside the college administration.
Netaji Subhas National Institute Of Sports & Sports Authority of India
Netaji Subhas National Institute Of Sports (NSNIS) and Sports Authority of India (SAI) offer sports scholarships with a vision to promote sports in India. The campus of the institute is situated in Patiala. The institutions have very high-end facilities for sports training. The institutes also boast of high-level academic programmes. The colleges also offer a national level scholarship, state level scholarship, scholarships for the college or the university students.The selection criteria are strictly based on merit and performance. The colleges provide some special scholarships to women. The college envisions at promoting sports by giving the students with an encouraging environment. The colleges also have facilities for training the coaches.
Delhi University
The Delhi University is popular for admitting students through sports quota. as it is more popularly known is also one of the universities in India which award admissions through the sports quota. The admission is done in two ways. The ways are:-
- The colleges admit students directly if they have represented the country in any sport.
- The students have cleared the trials.
The students need to clear two out of the three tests (endurance,strength and speed) to get into St. Stephen’s through sports quota. Stephens awards financial aids to the deserving students on the basis of need combined with merit. The sports scholarships are spread over fifteen different disciplines. The students applying through sports quota have to clear the mandatory trials apart from the fitness test.
