BHU Grading System: The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) uses the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) to grade students. Under this system, students who score between 90 and 100 marks receive an S grade with distinction. Those scoring between 80 and 89 marks are awarded an A grade, corresponding to a grade point of 9. The grading scale continues similarly based on the students’ total scores. If students are unhappy with their marks, they have the option to request a revaluation as well. How is CGPA Calculated at BHU?

The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) at BHU is determined by evaluating your academic performance across all semesters of your program. Here’s how the process works:

Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA)

This is calculated for each semester as follows:

  • Grade Points: Each course grade you receive has a specific grade point. For example, at BHU, an 'S' grade might equal 10 points, an 'A' 9 points, and so on.
  • Credit Hours: Courses are assigned credit values based on their workload.
  • Weighted Grade Points: To balance the different credit values of courses, multiply the grade points by the corresponding credit hours for each course.
  • Summation: Add the weighted grade points of all the courses in the semester.
  • SGPA Calculation: Divide the total weighted grade points by the total credit hours for that semester.

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

To calculate your CGPA, follow these steps:

  • Total Credits Calculation: First, add up all the credit hours from each semester.
  • Quality Points Calculation: For each semester, multiply your SGPA by the number of credit hours for that semester. Then, add together all these products (SGPA * credit hours) for every semester.
  • Final CGPA: Finally, divide the total quality points from all semesters by the total credit hours you have completed in your program.

Inadequate Academic Performance at BHU

The Academic Performance Evaluation Committee (APEC) assesses each undergraduate student's academic results according to the BHU grading system at the end of each semester. A student's performance is considered inadequate if it meets any of the following criteria:

  • A student is labelled "academically deficient" if they have not completed 75% of the required cumulative credits by the end of the academic year.
  • A deficient student may have either not taken courses from a previous semester or taken them but failed.
  • The deficiency might be due to failing classes, not registering for courses because of illness or other reasons, etc.
  • Students' progress is reviewed every semester. Depending on the severity of the deficiency, a student may receive a Warning, be placed on Academic Probation, or face cancellation of their academic course.

Details Mentioned on the BHU Scorecard

Under the BHU grading system, students can review specific details on their scorecard once the BHU results are released. The scorecard contains the student's name, course, examination year, marks obtained, grades, and other relevant information. If there are any discrepancies, students should reach out to the exam conducting body for clarification. Here's what you will find on your BHU scorecard:

  • Student’s Name
  • Parent’s Name
  • Date of Birth of Candidate
  • Roll Number
  • Registration Number
  • Application Number
  • Date and Time of Examination
  • Candidate’s Choice of Subject
  • Marks Secured (Theory/Practical)
  • Overall Marks Secured by the Candidate
  • Passing Status (Fail/ Pass/Backlog)

To sum up, the BHU grading system, called CBCS, uses letter grades and credit points to judge how well students are doing. Your semester-wise SGPAs are part of your overall CGPA, which is figured out by looking at how many credits you have earned across all your semesters. This system gives a good idea of how you are doing academically at BHU.

FAQs

What is Choice-Based Credit System?

The Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) gives students more freedom to choose. They can pick courses from a variety of mandatory and optional choices. Each course is given credits depending on how much there is to learn. By earning grades and credits, students build their CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) which shows how well they have done overall. This way of doing things encourages a learning experience that's more tailored and adaptable.

What is the first division in BHU?

At BHU, achieving the first division is a mark of academic brilliance. It is divided into two levels:
- First Division with Distinction: For those with a CGPA of 8.5 and above, it is the highest honour.
- First Division: Falling between 7.0 and 8.5 CGPA, this denotes outstanding performance.

What are the passing marks out of 70 in BHU?

BHU does not rely on a traditional out-of-70 or 100 passing mark system. Instead, they operate on a credit-based approach. To successfully pass a course, you must attain at least 40% overall. This comprises achieving a minimum of 40% in both internal assessments, typically 28 marks out of 70, and external exams.

How is CGPA calculated in BHU?

At BHU, your CGPA is calculated by taking into account the weighted credit points from every semester. We multiply the grade points of each semester by the credit hours and add them all together. After that, we divide this sum by the total credit hours you have taken in total. This CGPA shows how well you have performed academically throughout your time in the program.

How are results evaluated at BHU?

Throughout a course, students are assessed on various aspects such as two periodic exams, a final exam, quizzes, tutorials, assignments, lab work (if any), and make-up exams (if needed). These evaluations follow the BHU grading system. The course convener, in collaboration with other instructors (if involved), will decide the weight of each component.
