Curious to learn about how the IGNOU Grading System works? One of India's most well-known distance learning institutions, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), provides an extensive collection of certificate, diploma, UG, and PG programmes. The grading scheme used by the IGNOU is distinct from the conventional marking scheme or the Grading System in India. In addition to offering distance education to thousands of students in India and abroad, IGNOU is one of the biggest open universities globally.

IGNOU Grading System uses a letter-grade scale, ranging from “A to E”, where ‘A’ (80% and above marks) is the highest and ‘E’ (below 40% marks) is the lowest grade, where ‘F’ indicates failure in a subject. A student's overall grade point average (GPA) is calculated using the grade points assigned to each letter grade. A candidate's academic success is gauged by their attainted GPA, which is determined by adding up all their credits and assigning each one a specific grade. Although this is a broad grading scheme, there might be some variances for certain IGNOU programmes. In this article, we shall go into great detail about the IGNOU Grading System and IGNOU passing marks out of 100 for bachelor’s and master’s courses.

IGNOU Grading System

To be considered for academic success at IGNOU, candidates have to receive at least a 'D' on their midterm, final, and other assignment evaluations. This grade is the lowest requirement for all of the academic courses that IGNOU offers. However, students need to make sure that their cumulative average grade is a "C" or higher to pass both their last term and their semester. This has an overall impact on how they perform over the programme duration, demonstrating a steady state of understanding and implementation of their subject matter expertise.

The following table outlines a more comprehensive and in-depth explanation of how the IGNOU marks its students. It highlights the nuances of the IGNOU grading system and illustrates the requirements for success at various points in an academic career.

Benefits of the IGNOU Grading System Utilisation

Compared to the conventional marking method, the IGNOU grading system offers numerous benefits. Among the perks are:

  • Ongoing Evaluation: The grading system of IGNOU considers how well candidates do in assignments and practicals, which aids in the continuous assessment of pupils.
  • Impartiality: The 10-point standard scale that forms the basis of the grading system of IGNOU guarantees impartiality in the assessment of students' performance.
  • Flexibility: Students can select how many classes they wish to take in a semester, which gives them flexibility in the IGNOU grading system.

What is the Need for an IGNOU Grading System?

IGNOU takes a more thorough and all-encompassing approach to education than traditional educational institutions, where tests determine final grades at the end of the semester. Candidates can put forth their competence and expertise continuously during the semester through continuous evaluation. It ensures that they participate actively in the learning process instead of depending only on exam results. This method fosters a better comprehension of the subject and helps students hone their problem-solving and critical thought.

IGNOU's continuous evaluation system mainly consists of several elements, including projects, assignments, practicals, presentations, and discussion participation. These tests are intended to evaluate several course components, such as communication skills, practical application, theoretical understanding, and research skills. Through a variety of assessment techniques, IGNOU seeks to offer an in-depth analysis of each student's overall academic achievement.

Candidates also need to realise that passing their chosen IGNOU course requires more than just getting a certain grade on their conventional theoretical exams. These are accompanied by tutor-marked assignments (TMA), which the students must also pass. The TMAs are a crucial component of the IGNOU Grading System, and achieving academic success requires satisfactory performance in both domains.

In a nutshell, the IGNOU grading system can initially seem perplexing and complicated, but it becomes a lot easier with a little insight and assistance. The grading method of IGNOU has benefits in terms of flexibility and extensive awareness of a student's achievement, even though it may not be the same as more conventional percentage-based systems. It promotes ongoing learning and development and enables a more thorough evaluation of everyone's strengths and flaws.

FAQs

What is the division of IGNOU marks?

The division of IGNOU marks is as follows:

  • Grade A- 80% and above (5-point grade)

  • Grade B- 60%-79.9% (4-point grade)

  • Grade C- 50%-59.9% (3-point grade)

  • Grade D- 40%-49.9% (2-point grade)

  • Grade E- Below 40% (1-point grade)

  • Grade F- Below 35% (Fail)

Do all courses offered at the university have an IGNOU Grading System?

No, all courses offered at the university do not have an IGNOU Grading System (A to E) as others follow the marking system (60,70, etc. any numerical figure). Programmes with grading systems include BEd, MBA(MP), PGDET, MAEDU, and others; those with marking systems include MEG, BA, BCA, MCA, and MSO.

What are the IGNOU passing marks for an assignment?

The IGNOU passing marks for assignments at a bachelor’s level are 35/100. This implies that a bachelor's degree candidate must pass with at least 35 marks on each assignment. However,  students enrolled in master's programmes must meet a slightly higher qualifying mark threshold — 40 out of 100 is the minimum IGNOU assignment pass mark.

How are IGNOU marks calculated?

IGNOU marks are calculated by allocating equal weight to assignment marks and term-end theory exam marks. The term-end theory exam is worth 70% of the total weight, while the assignment is worth 30%. For instance, if a student received 60 marks for their assignment and 90 marks for their written exam, they will receive 63 (70% of 90) + 18 (30% of 60) = 81 marks.

What is the IGNOU Grading System?

IGNOU Grading System is simply based on the credit system where each programme has a certain number of credits allocated. IGNOU utilises a 10-point scale grading system with letter grades ranging between A (80% and above) and E (below 40%), where an additional F denotes failure.
