CAT 2024 Slot 1 Exam Analysis by IMS

Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension

• The overall difficulty level of the VARC section was moderate.
• There were 16 Reading Comprehension questions in the VARC section out of which 2 passages ranged from easy to moderate in terms of difficulty and 12 RC questions could be attempted by the test-takers with high accuracy.
• No direct Grammar or Vocabulary questions were found.
• More careful reading was required for passages on Critique of Behavioral Economics and Revival of Bandicoots in Australia.
• No jumbled paragraph questions were found. The jumbled paragraphs were replaced by one additional paragraph completion question and one summary question.
• There were 3 questions each of Summary (MCQ) and Paragraph Completion(MCQ), and two Odd Sentence questions (TITA).
• 8 Verbal Ability questions were asked out of which 5 or 6 attempts with high accuracy were possible.
• To score around 85%ile score in VARC, candidates must attempt around 12 or 13 questions with an accuracy of approximately 60%.
• To score more than 95 percentile in VARC, candidates must attempt around 17 or 18 questions with an accuracy of approximately 70%.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning

The overall difficulty level of the DILR section ranged from moderate to high and it was relatively easier if compared with the DILR Section of Slot 1 of CAT 2023. Unlike last year, where there were a total of four sets, each comprising five questions, there were two sets with 5 questions in each and three sets with 4 questions in each in CAT 2024. To score around 85%ile score in DILR, candidates must attempt around 10 or 11 questions with an accuracy of approximately 80%. To score more than 95 percentile in DILR, candidates must attempt around 14 or 15 questions with an accuracy of approximately 85%.

Quantitative Ability

• The overall difficulty level of the QA section was low.
• There were 8 TITA questions and 14 MCQs in this section.
• Maximum questions were asked from Arithmetic (8 questions), followed by Algebra (7 questions).
• In Arithmetic, the questions were primarily from Simple Interest & Compound Interest, Time and Work, Time-Speed-Distance, Ratio Proportion, Mixtures & Alligations, Multiple operations, and Profit & Loss.
• Quadratic equations, Inequality with graph, Functions, and Identity-based questions, etc were the primary topics in Algebra.
• In Modern Math, questions were asked from Logarithms, Sequences, Permutations etc.
• In Geometry, questions were asked from Quadrilaterals, Sphere with cuboid, etc.
• 3 questions were asked from Geometry, 3 questions from Modern Math and 1 from Numbers.
• Questions were also asked on remainders and numbers.
• To score around 85%ile score in DILR, candidates must attempt around 7 to 8 questions with an accuracy of approximately 80%.
• To score more than 95 percentile in DILR, candidates must attempt around 9 to 10 questions with an accuracy of approximately 85%.

CAT 2024 Slot 2 Exam Analysis by IMS

Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension

• The difficulty level of two of the passages ranged from easy to moderate. Candidates could attempt about 11 or 12 RC questions with high accuracy.
• No jumbled paragraph questions were found. The jumbled paragraphs were replaced by one additional paragraph completion question and one summary question.
• In VA, candidates could attempt 4 or 5 questions with high accuracy.
• To score around 85%ile score in VARC, candidates must attempt around 12 or 13 questions with an accuracy of approximately 65%.
• To score more than 95 percentile in VARC, candidates must attempt around 15 or 16 questions with an accuracy of approximately 65-70%.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning

The overall difficulty level of the DILR section was moderate. To score around 85%ile score in DILR, candidates must attempt around 9 to 10 questions with an accuracy of approximately 80%. To score more than 95 percentile in DILR, candidates must attempt around 13 to 14 questions with an accuracy of approximately 85%.

Quantitative Ability

• The overall difficulty level of the QA section was low.
• Maximum questions were asked from Arithmetic (8 questions), followed by Algebra (5 questions).
• 3 questions were asked from Geometry, 3 questions from Modern Math and 3 from Numbers.
• In Arithmetic, the questions were primarily from Simple Interest & Compound Interest, Time and Work, Time-Speed-Distance, Ratio Proportion, Mixtures & Alligations, and Profit & Loss.
• Quadratic equations, Inequality, Modulus, Functions, and Identity-based questions etc. were the main topics asked from Algebra.
• In the number system, questions were found on remainders, Indices, Surds.
• One question from last year slot 3 was also repeated.

Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension

• The difficulty level of this section was Moderate.
• No questions were found on Parajumbles.
• 2 Odd One Out and 3 Summary questions were asked.
• 3 questions were found on Paragraph completion.
• RC and VA questions were not clubbed together and they appeared randomly in the question paper.
• 1 TITA questions were asked from VA.
• To obtain a 95+ percentile, candidates must have attempted 12 or 13 questions with 70% accuracy.
• To obtain a 85+ percentile, candidates must have attempted 10 or 11 questions with 60% accuracy.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning

• The DILR section of Slot 3 was more difficult compared to Slots 1 & 2. The overall difficulty level of this section ranged from moderate to difficult.
• 12 MCQs and 10 TITA questions were asked from this section.
• The set on Network of roads and ATMs was considering a bit challenging.
• To obtain a 95+ percentile, candidates must have attempted 12 or 13 questions with 85% accuracy.
• To obtain a 85+ percentile, candidates must have attempted 9 or 10 questions with 80% accuracy.

Quantitative Aptitude

• 14 MCQs and 8 TITA questions were asked in this section. 
• Questions involving Algebra concepts, application of functions, and series were tricky and hence slightly difficult to answer.
• Questions related to Medians and intersection points were straightforward and easy to answer.
• There was a question on Octagon.
• To obtain a 95+ percentile, candidates must have attempted 7 or 8 questions with 85% accuracy.
• To obtain a 85+ percentile, candidates must have attempted 9 or 10 questions with 80% accuracy.

Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)

There were 16 questions on reading comprehension and 8 questions on verbal ability in the VARC section. The VA questions were easier overall than the Reading Comprehension ones.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)

In CAT 2021, the DILR part saw a minor alteration, consisting of a total of 4 sets, 2 of which contained 6 questions and the other 2 contained 4 questions apiece. In contrast to the previous few years, there were no sets based on Venn diagrams.

Quantitative Ability (QA)

Arithmetic predominated in this somewhat tough portion, which was followed by Algebra. This year, there were 8 TITA questions. The secret was in picking the correct questions to attempt. In the allotted time, students ought to have been able to attempt 13–14 questions with an accuracy rate of 85–90%.

Highlights

• The difficulty level of VARC in the second shift was higher than in the first shift.
