Predict your Rank

The CLAT Cutoffs determine the minimal scores and positions needed for admission to NLUs. After the counselling rounds are over, each NLU releases the CLAT cut-off in the form of opening and closing ranks. In the general category, NLSIU Bangalore finished round 1 with a closing rank of 80 for the 2021 session.

Those who have appeared for CLAT 2024 can go through the analysis of CLAT Cutoff 2021 vs 2020 to understand what could be cut off this year. For the general category, the CLAT Cut Off often falls between 95 and 100, whereas for the SC/ST category, it typically falls between 80 and 85. According to studies from the previous year, the CLAT Cut Off for the top 3 NLUs is anticipated to range from 100 to 105, and for the top 5 NLUs, it is expected to range from 90 to 95. The cut-off set by the university serves as the basis for CLAT seat allocation. Typically, a score between 80 and 85 is required for admission to one of the top three NLUs. Candidates can be admitted to both UG and PG programmes based on their CLAT 2022 scores. If a candidate wants to be included first on the merit list for LLM colleges, they must receive a score of at least 90.

The CLAT 2024 cutoff will depend on some variables, including the candidates' CLAT 2024 scores, rank, preferred colleges, seat availability, and university reservation policies. Candidates who have taken the CLAT exam in 2024 should be aware of the cut-off scores from the previous year because it will help them in their preparation. This article would be of immense help to the law aspirants who are taking the CLAT 2024 examination.

Differences Between CLAT 2021 and CLAT 2020

The CLAT 2020 exam pattern underwent some adjustments owing to the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs). The number of questions was lowered, per the press release issued on November 22, 2019. 200 questions were to be answered in 120 minutes in the previous exam format. The CLAT 2022 exam included 150 questions that were to be answered in 120 minutes. It covered the English language, and current events, including general knowledge, legal reasoning, logical reasoning, and quantitative techniques.

The following is a list of the significant changes to the CLAT exam pattern beginning in 2020.

  • 150 instead of 200 questions were asked overall.
  • The exam consisted of questions based on texts rather than statements.
  • Sets were introduced in the Quantitative Techniques subject, which was previously known as Elementary Mathematics from CLAT 2020 onwards.
  • Instead of utilising legal knowledge, candidates were required to use their legal aptitude when answering questions in the Legal Aptitude part.
  • Earlier, there was only one comprehension question in the English language part. This was altered, and all of the questions in this area are now based on passages, much like in the other CLAT sections.
  • Candidates have 2 hours to finish the paper, and the exam's duration hasn't changed.
  • An almost similar quantity of questions was asked from each subject in CLAT 2020 and CLAT 2021.
  • Extra questions were asked from legal reasoning in CLAT 2020 as compared to CLAT 2021 since it carries higher weightage in the CLAT question paper and one or two fewer questions were asked from current affairs and general knowledge in CLAT 2021 as compared to CLAT 2020 examination.

We have compiled questions from each part of the CLAT UG 2020 and 2021 exam paper using the tabulated data that is listed below:

Factors Affecting CLAT Cut-Off

Candidates should be aware that the CLAT cut-offs vary each year depending on a number of variables. These consist of:

  • Seats made available by national law colleges (At present all NLUs offer a combined intake of around 1308 seats in CLAT UG and around 867 seats in CLAT LLM)
  • University reservation policies vary; some give home reservations for up to 25% of the total number of seats offered.
  • Due to the popularity of the top 5 NLUs, the NLU cut-off for admission to these colleges is typically higher as they are mostly preferred by top candidates.
  • Scores and positions attained by the applicant in the CLAT in 2022. For the top 3 NLUs, a good score in CLAT 2022 will be in the range of 110-115.
  • Around 60,000 candidates will take the exam for the LLB programme in CLAT 2022, according to the number of applicants. There will be over 10,000 applicants for CLAT LLM.
  • The number of candidates who preferred a certain NLU will bring an increment in the cut-off and will increase the difficulty of getting a seat in that particular NLU due to higher competition.
  • The number of applications received also affects the CLAT Cut-Off. If more applicants are present then the competition will be tougher and if fewer applications are received then the competition tends to be lower for that year.
  • The exam difficulty level also affects the CLAT cut-off. If the CLAT exam level is difficult in a certain year then the cut-off is relaxed and there are good chances of getting a seat in the preferred NLU.

Importance of CLAT Cut-off

Most students would be wondering after taking the CLAT 2022 exam if they will receive the preferred NLU with their current score. They should check the previous year’s CLAT cut-offs to find the solution. The cut-offs are important because they establish the minimal standard for admittance to a particular NLU. Candidates won't be considered for admission to a particular NLU if they don't meet the cutoffs. Nevertheless, he or she may be admitted to any other NLU based on their CLAT 2022 performance. CLAT cutoffs are an important determining factor that can provide a fair idea to a candidate about their selection chances to a particular NLU and/or other NLUs based on their CLAT examination performance.
