JEEMAIN online examination was a computer based exam and held on 09 and 10 Apr. More than a lakh students took the online JEEMAINs Exam. JEEMAIN online examination was conducted at over 2000 centers across India and abroad. The result is expected on 27th Apr 2016. The cut off for JEE Advanced will also be declared on the same day based on the result of JEEMAINs. The score in JEE-Main is important in seeking admission to 4-year science and engineering degree courses of institutions like NITs, IIITs, and other national level colleges in India along with the score of class XII.

According to many test takers, paper quality was quite on the expected lines. The difficulty level of the exam varied from subject to the subject also from pen & paper test (held on 3rd April). While in pen & paper test maths was the easiest of the lot, Chemistry had a mix of easy and difficult questions and Physics had easy to moderate questions, students taking the online mode felt Chemistry questions were quite doable while Maths questions were slightly tricky. The overall level of difficulty was moderate. Some even felt write online test gave them more time to prepare, more flexibility to sift through the questions and better time management. Hence, they reported that the paper did not pose any unexpected challenge.

It was reported that a good number questions in the online mode were similar to those which appeared in previous years’ exams.

The Paper had objective type multiple choice questions from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics each having 30 questions. Each question had equal weight with four marks for right answer and there was negative marking of 0.25% (one mark) for a wrong answer.

The paper was largely set from CBSE syllabus of Class XI and XII, but the questions were a conceptual type that needed some analytical skills. About 30 questions were easy, 45 questions were of moderate and 15 questions were of relatively higher difficulty.

Score and Result for JEE Main- 2016
I. The result of Paper-I of JEE Main– 2016 for all candidates will be declared on 27th April 2016. This will show marks obtained in Paper-I of JEE Main– 2016 and the status of those who qualify for appearing in JEE (Advanced) – 2016. Admission in NIT’s / IIIT’s / DTU / CFTI’s and other allied institutes will be based on overall merit list comprising of 60% of JEE Main marks and 40 percent of normalized Board marks. On the basis of score in JEE Main-2016 and normalized score in Class 12th or equivalent qualifying exam (60% & 40% weight respectively), separate rank lists will be prepared for admission to B.E./B. Tech. and B. Arch/ B. Planning in institutions other than IITs. This will be declared on or before 30th of June 2016. Institutions in the states of Gujarat-Madhya Pradesh Nagaland and Odisha take admission through JEE MAINS score.

III. Only the All India Rank (AIR) is used for admissions to NITs/IIITs/CFTIs/SFIs/Others.

The normalized Qualifying examination marks will be based on the position of the candidate in the Board (i.e. his/her percentile score). The weight of normalized qualifying examination marks is only for deciding the ranking of JEE (Main) which will be used for admission to all Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs)/ NITs/IIITs but excluding IITs.

A score of 150 plus should fetch an admission in NIT or in some good CFTIs with a suitable score in XII. As the number of students qualifying for the JEE Advanced will be higher, this time, the cut off for it may be less as compared to the last couple of years. As per Prof Saurabh Kumar of Vidya Mandir Classes, it should be around 100 for a general candidate.
