Nestled in Jodhpur-Nagaur Highway, IIT Jodhpur is one of the seven 'New Generation IITs' established in 2008. Formerly known as IIT Rajasthan, IIT Jodhpur began its academic session in 2009. IITJ has national and international collaborations with educational institutions like the University of Western Ontario (Canada), the University of Waterloo (Canada), Institute of Science and Technology (Nara, Japan), Universitat Rovira I Virgili (Tarragona, Spain), University of Manitoba (Canada), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Jodhpur), National Law University (Jodhpur) and Embassy of France in India among several others.

IIT Jodhpur claims to be a future-driven institute with its campus spreading across 852 acres of land. The campus was recently inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on October 6, 2023. IITJ currently has a total of 10 departments, 3 schools, 5 centers and 6 interdisciplinary research programmes. 

Strangely, the co-ed institution has a comparatively low female count with a male-to-female student ratio of 8:2. The faculty-student ratio is excellent at 1:6. With a good infrastructure and commendable placement record with the highest salary package of INR 23.8 LPA, IIT Jodhpur qualifies to be a favorable option for the students.

NIRF: Great Performance!

Our Take:

In the NIRF Ranking 2023, IIT Jodhpur has performed well by obtaining 66th place in the overall category. Even though IIT Jodhpur was placed in the same rank in the engineering category, there was an improvement in scores from 56.70 in 2022 to 58.03 in 2023.

IIT Jodhpur Academic Composition

IIT Jodhpur academia is a mix of classroom learning, assignments and practicals. The undergraduate and postgraduate courses at IIT Jodhpur are based on three tenets of semester system, credit System and relative grading. IIT Jodhpur courses are administered by academic committee (AC) chaired by Dean of the concerned department.

It is evident that students actually enrolled are a lot more in numbers as compared to the approved intake. Also, a few students have expressed the deteriorating quality of teaching and the data above also justifies the same. For B.Tech courses, 971 more students were provided IIT Jodhpur admission than the approved intake of 490.

IIT Jodhpur Fees

The fee structure of IIT Jodhpur courses is as follows: 

Our Take:

Fee-wise, the highest fee of INR 8,00,000  is charged for the MBA programme. Students have expressed that the fees are reasonable. Also, if we look at the placement report of the MBA course for the 2021-23 batch, the average CTC offered is INR 13.03 LPA which holds a decent ROI compared to the fees charged. Similarly, with a fee of INR 4,06,000 and an average CTC of INR 28 LPA for B.Tech CSE, the ROI is satisfactory.

IIT Jodhpur Infrastructure

Academic Buildings

Students are entitled to thermal comfort smart buildings. The buildings are GRIHA 4/5 star compliant within a GRIHA LD benchmark campus.
 

Library

With a collection of over 12,000 volumes of books including textbooks, research and reference books, and monographs,  IIT Jodhpur Library operates in a computerised environment with aautomated member and circulation services. Some of the services provided by the library include memberships, circulation, reference & information services, inter-library loans & document lending services, current awareness services, and digital library services.

Hostel

IIT Jodhpur students are provided with single occupancy air-conditioned rooms of approximately 80 sq. ft. area. Further, students are entitled to a lawn, common room, TV room, reading room, art and music room, carom/table tennis/ indoor football/ snooker/ chess/ badminton play area and gymnasiums. The hostel has accommodation capacity of 236 students. Some of the facilities the IIT Jodhpur hostellers enjoy are:

Mess

IIT Jodhpur boasts about its 3-storey fully air-conditioned dining building fully air-conditioned. There is a food court and restaurant on the 3rd floor providing students with meals, snacks and beverages. 

Our Take:

Students have expressed that for the hosteller's food facilities, the institute has arranged for a vendor. The food quality is good and the mess can cater up to 1000 students in a single sitting. The mess menu is revised and monitored by student representative bodies with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options that are prepared in two separate kitchens

Fests

Students at IIT Jodhpur enjoy the following fests:

•  Aftaab- Literature fest and 
• Prometeo- Technical fest. 

Sports

IIT Jodhpur boasts extensive sports facilities, including grounds for cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, lawn tennis, and badminton, as well as facilities for athletics and gymnastics. 

Our Take:

According to student feedback, each sport is supported by a physical training instructor and national level coaches. The college hosts both inter-college and intra-college sports competitions on an ongoing basis.

IIT Jodhpur Internships and Placements

Internships

IIT Jodhpur claims to provide internship to maximum of its students. Microsoft, Google, Deloitte, American Express, Housing, Gartner, Graviton Research Capital, Oracle, and DE-Shaw are a few companies that students have opted for internships according to the official website

Our Take:

Students have said that the institute does provide internship opportunities, but, it does not always resonate with student's areas of interest. Most of the internships are based on thesis papers.

Placements

IIT Jodhpur has released the MBA placement report for the 2021-23 batch. As per the placement report, students were offered roles such as Technology Consultant, Product Management, Cybersecurity Risk and Advisory, Sales and Marketing Analytics, Technical Programme Manager, Marketing Operations, Sales Incentive Servicing, and Campus Recruitment Specialist among others.

Some of the top recruiters in IIT Jodhpur placements 2022 were Accenture, Amazon, IBM, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Adobe, etc.

Our Take:

If we talk about the MBA, the highest salary package increased by INR 2,45,000 in 2023 compared to 2022 in the IITJ MBA placement drive. However, there was a decrease in average and median salary by INR 1,03,000 and INR 1,00,000, respectively. The college has excellent placements for engineering courses. The average CTC of Rs 28 LPA for BTech shows the institute's effort in providing the best placement opportunities to students. 

IIT Jodhpur Diversity and Demographic Representation

IIT Jodhpur extends its educational services to students from not only all corners of India but also from around the world. In terms of gender distribution, there is a significant imbalance with a male-to-female ratio of 8:2. Furthermore, from a diversity perspective, a substantial 79% of the students enrolled at IIT Jodhpur hail from states outside of Rajasthan. Our Take: 

With 16.9% female population for UG 4-year and 30.8% female population for PG 2-year, the numbers are quite alarming. In this regard, IIT Jodhpur must investigate and make the necessary changes that do not compromise the essence of a co-ed institution.

IIT Jodhpur Diversity Representation

Our Take:

Despite being one of the premier institutes in India, IIT Jodhpur has failed to attract the interest of international students. On the brighter side, the college has an ample number of students from states other than Rajasthan. This shows cultural diversity at the campus.

IIT Jodhpur Faculty and Administration/Management

IIT Jodhpur currently functions with over 286 faculty members and 82 staff at the academic, administrative and technical levels. With a total of 1618 students, the faculty-to-student ratio stands at a satisfactory 1:6. The department-wise faculty count as retrieved from the IIT Jodhpur Annual Report 2021-22 is as follows:

Our Take:

As per the above statistical data, it is evident that IIT Jodhpur has left no scope of negligence in fulfilling the quantitative quota faculty-wise. However, students have raised concerns regarding the quality of teaching. Students voiced that some faculty members exhibit little to no support for students. To justify the same, number of PhD students from IIT Jodhpur commented that during the pandemic, faculty members imposed a heavier workload on students, with continuous four- to five-day-long final exams for each subject, along with three to four assignments every week for all their courses, as well as various additional tasks like presentations and quizzes. Even though, considering it as an initiative taken by the institute to keep the students engaged,  it's important not to overlook the comments that have inadvertently caused stress among the students.

IIT Jodhpur Location

Located on Jodhpur-Nagaur Highway (NH 65) at Karwad Village, IIT Jodhpur lies on the outskirts of Jodhpur City well-connected by flights and trains at a distance of 25 km and 24 km, respectively from the campus premises.

The campus is subdivided into Pocket A and Pocket B. Academic and residential areas of the institute are established in Pocket A. Pocket B, nestles the project building, also known as the first building of IIT Jodhpur.

Our Take:

Students have sounded satisfied with the surrounding environment of the institute. They have added that most of the infrastructure such as administrative offices, library, lecture halls, laboratories and department buildings are located in Pocket A of IIT Jodhpur. Kendriya Vidyalaya operates from Pocket B of IIT Jodhpur.

IIT Jodhpur Expectation vs Reality - CollegeDekho Verdict

Apart from good infrastructure,  academic curriculum and placement opportunities,  one point that the students are super-impressed with is the effortless branch change policy. The only criteria for students to change their branch is to obtain a CGPA of 9 in the previous examination. 

IIT Jodhpur has met the target of built-up area and student strength as specified by the cabinet for setting up of the IIT in 2023. Not only that,  IITJ is the first 'second-generation IIT' to achieve the milestone. This signifies that the institute is developing itself in the right direction. 

However, there is one major discrepancy that cannot be overlooked. Citing a high percentage of student enrollment above the approved intake limit and the unapproachable demeanor of few professors as reasons, students have opined that the quality of teaching has deteriorated over the years.
