Shivaji University is a public university founded in 1962 and named after the great Maratha warrior and founder of the Maratha empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The university has been approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Shivaji University is spread over three districts Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara and has a strength of 3 lakh students.
