The Governor of Maharashtra established the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur University on August 1, 2004 and inaugurated it on August 3, 2004. Both undergraduate and postgraduate courses are available at the University of Solapur in the fields of arts, social sciences, business, law, management, engineering, and technology. Solapur University is regarded by UGC as one of the top institutions in the area and received a ‘B’ grade from NAAC in its accreditation. Around 60,000 students are served by the approximately 35.5-acre Solapur University campus.

Solapur University admission to some of its courses is determined by an entrance exam organised by the university itself. Every year, the university administers the Solapur University Common Entrance Test (SU CET) based on the results, applicants are called for admission and shortlisted.
