Dr. Vithal Kamat Inspires Students at AISSMS CHMCT Orientation Programme

AISSMS College of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Pune, had the great honour of welcoming Dr. Vithal Indira Venkatesh Kamat as the Chief Guest for the Orientation Programme for First Year B.Sc. Hospitality Studies and Culinary Studies students. A well-known name in the hospitality industry and a strong supporter of the environment, Dr. Kamat’s visit made the event very special and memorable for students and their families.

Dr. Kamat is the Executive Chairman and Managing Director of Kamat Hotels Group Limited. He is most famous for starting The Orchid, India’s first eco-friendly hotel. He is a leader in promoting green and sustainable tourism in the country. He praised AISSMS CHMCT for giving students real-world experience through part-time jobs, international internships, and the special Weekend Skilling Programme. He told students to focus on learning and use their freedom wisely. “Freedom is to be used, not misused,” he said. Dr. Kamat shared stories from his own life from his early days to working as a cook in London. He spoke about how working abroad taught him discipline, hard work, and never giving up. He even shared a funny story where someone once asked him, “How much yeast do you need for idli?” This made everyone laugh and reminded them how food brings different cultures together.

To motivate the students, he shared his “3D Formula” Determination, Dedication, and Discipline. He told students, “Win over the person who challenges you,” and added, “Adversity is often the first step to growth.” Dr. Kamat also shared many thoughtful quotes. He said, “Talent is a gift of God. What you do with it is your gift to God,” encouraging students to use their skills wisely. He reminded them that “Ideas are like money” in today’s world and that “Food is eaten by the eyes first” highlighting the importance of food presentation. He touched hearts by saying, “Mom’s food is the best because her heart is in it.”

He also showed his respect for his parents by calling himself Dr. Vithal Indira Venkat Kamat and carried a cloth bag to the event, supporting his message of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” At the end of his speech, he invited students and parents to ask questions. He offered a signed copy of his book Idli, Orchid and Will Power to the person who asked the best question. He gave it to a parent who asked about gender bias in kitchens. His reply was clear and powerful: “There is no difference between a girl and a boy. Talent wins always.”

Principal Dr. Sonali Jadhav thanked Dr. Kamat for his inspiring words. Shri Malojiraje Chhatrapati, Honorary Secretary of AISSM Society, also congratulated the college for a successful event. Dr. Kamat’s visit left a deep impact and will continue to inspire students as they begin their journey in the world of hospitality.
