H.R. College of commerce and economics Campus Facilities - Hostel Fees, Infrastructure, Address

• The campus is pretty small and just consists of a single six storey building dedicated to HR College
• All the classrooms are big enough to accommodate the students comfortably and are equipped with air-conditioners.

The Council for Debate and Elocution (CODE) saw an active participation from the junior college students throughout the year. The FYJC orientation programme was compered by Kayshav Verma, Natasha Daswani and Priyanshi Choksi.

CODE held its signature event 'Stand-up Speak-up' where 50 students participated. Parth Mehta, Varshini Sunder and Nidhi Parikh bagged the first, second and third place respectively.

The Cathedral Model United Nations, the most prestigious MUN, held its three-day conference from August 8-10, 2014 at the Trident Hotel, Mumbai. The delegates Aanchal Maheshwari and Kayshav Verma won the outstanding delegate award in the ‘Balkan Crisis Committee’.

CODE sent a delegation of 8 students to BD Somani Model United Nations. Aadish Shah won the best delegate award.

A creative writing competition was held in the College with 20 participants. They were given a picture and had to build a story, not less than 1000 words. Ojasvn Kirpane, Joshita Chopra and Parth Mehta were declared the winners.

CODE members also participated in The Dhirubhai Ambani Model United Nations and The Hiranandani Foundation School Model United Nations. A couple of them received verbal mentions.

CODE members also participated in the KC Model United Nations held from November 7-9, 2014. This year, it featured the unique League of Nations in which delegates had to come up with ways to prevent the Second World War. Kayshav Verma chaired this Committee. Varshini Sunder bagged the outstanding delegate award and Neel Doshi got a special mention.

The Rotaract Club of Jaihind College Model United Nations was held on December 15 & 16, 2014 at the World Trade Centre, Mumbai. Unnati Shah and Varshini Sunder were a part of the Executive board. Kunal Jogani won the outstanding delegate award.

The Hill Spring International School held its two day conference on the February 14 & 15, 2015. Varshini Sunder won the outstanding delegate award.

The Battle of Brains, held on February 5, 2015 witnessed a participation of 40 students. Neel Doshi, Bhavik Dhedia and Deepankar Paryani secured the first, second and third place respectively. The participants tackled the various rounds of the debate impressively.

The French Club aims to encourage and enhance the linguistic skills of the students by creating a mélange between the love for France, The French language and the French culture.

The French National Day was celebrated with a screening of a movie on the French Revolution. Club members presented a Salsa, Ballet and An Indian Bollywood Dance. “La Marseillaise” the French National Anthem was sung by the French Correspondents from the Study India Exchange Program who participated in the event. The National Day concluded with a quiz based on France.

The Amazing Race

The Amazing Race, a fun-filled event where about 100 students from various colleges of Mumbai participated was a grand success. There were a series of tasks to be completed by students in pairs, tasks were spread all over the South Bombay. There were various tasks such as Bumm Bumm Balle, Mustachio, Chamak Dikhlaa Jaa, and many more. The first three winning pairs were given certificates and gift cards.

The French Fiesta

The French Fiesta had some sizzling salsa and Bollywood Dance performances. Ms. Parinaz performed an elegant Ballet Dance.

The talking point of the fiesta were the stalls such as pani puri, nail art, accessories, key chains, tattoos, confectionary items, cold drinks etc. put up by the students.

The event also hosted a fashion show which was a treat for the spectators, judged by Ms Monica Muwar. There were poetry and essay competitions too.

The event was graced by Principal Dr. Indu Shahani and Vice Principals Dr. Rekha Bahadur, Mrs. Anila Pillai and Mrs. Deepika Bhatia who presented certificates to the participants during the induction ceremony

Hindi Essay Competition

To encourage creative writing skills an Essay Competition was organized for the students with options to choose a topic ranging from imaginative, autobiographical to descriptive. Vice-Principals Ms. Anila Pillai & Deepika Bhatia graced the occasion and encouraged 72 plus student participants. 11 Consolation Prizes were distributed.

Gul E Gulzar-Kavi Sammelan

December 2, 2014

Gul-E-Gulzar organized by Hindi Sahitya Parishad was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Indu Shahani along with Vice-Principals Ms. Anila Pillai and Ms. Dipika Bhatia. This was followed a Kathak performance to invoke the blessings of the almighty.

There were two categories for the event viz. Sher-O-Shayari & Hasya Vyang Kavita. The décor which included beautiful photos of great Hindi poets provided the ambience to the competitors to compete with each other. The judges for the event were Ms. Rekha Verma & Ms. Bhavna Shah. An event truly enjoyed by all. The programme concluded with the prizes for the winners.

The year 2014 is a landmark year in international environmental efforts as it marks the end of the decade exalting education for Sustainable Development. In an attempt to spread awareness among the students towards a sustainable environment two major outings were planned by NCHR, which enabled the youth to bond with nature in and around the city. The Nature Club of H.R. College held its orientation where the Core Committee of the Club was inducted for the year 2014-2015.

Heritage Walk

July 16, 2014

A unique Heritage Walk followed the Orientation Ceremony, to generate awareness towards Protection of Heritage Buildings from Urban Pollution. A special android app, developed by the IT team of the club, enabled the 90 students participating in the event, to access resources on the heritage sites visited. By saving paper, this enabled the students to reduce not only their own carbon footprint, but also that of the college.

The event commenced with a presentation which provided the information which would help the students as they walked through the heritage spots of Mumbai. The 3 hour long walk included, 'old' fort, the European half of the city, art deco buildings like Belvedere Court and Empress Court, ancient buildings like the Old Secretariat, the Gateway of India, University of Mumbai, Bombay High Court, NGMA, David Sassoon library, Prince of Wales Museum, Watsons hotel, Flora Fountain, St. Thomas Cathedral and Horniman Circle. The members were accompanied by the faculty in-charge, Dr. Chandani Bhattacharjee.

Nature Club's Flamingo Watch

Keeping up with their decades-old tradition, thousands of flamingos landed in Mumbai and surrounding areas from various parts of the world. The flamingos start migrating to Mumbai during winter and leave before monsoon. This is the time when they are the largest in numbers. Not only Flamingos but also Little Egret, Brown-headed Gull, Black-headed Ibis and Caspian Tern, among other species, reach Mumbai during this time of the year.

The Nature Club of H.R College organized a Flamingo Watch for the students of the college. A full day excursion with around 30students led by faculty-in-charge Dr. Chandani Bhattacharjee, visited Seawoods near Nerul in Navi Mumbai for bird watching. Apart from flamingos, several other birds like the ibis, sandpipers, drongos, and ducks were spotted. The young nature enthusiasts were sensitized to the beauty and the variety of nature right in their own city, and spread the message of conservation. The students were encouraged to take photographs of nature while on their nature trail and flamingo watch as part of a Photography Competition. The winning photograph was by Parth Sethia, with Tarun Bhagtaney as runner up.

Green Ambassadors of the Club

The members have also been actively participating and representing the College as Green Ambassadors through the year.

Saumya Mundra, Aditya Lalwani and Neel Churiwala participated in the ECOFEST of St. Teresa's Institute of Education in the impromptu speaking, Ad Fad and Frame game slogan making competition.

Sagar Punjabi represented the Club at the Sanctuary Asia held Green Awards.

Tarun Bhagtaney and Aleesha Fernandez participated in the photography and environment slogan at the SMA-awards, held by the Environment Department, Maharashtra.

Anirudh Poddar, took a solo trip to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and underwent training to become a dive master.

Through their immense enthusiasm and dedication for environmental consciousness, this student organisation attempts to sensitize the youth on the need for conservation and sustainable practices in an informal and creative manner. They embody the principle that the small actions of a few can bring about a positive change in the world at large.

Orientation

The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of H.R. College conducted its orientation ceremony for the academic year 2014-15. Principal Dr. Indu Shahani, Vice - Principal Dr. Rekha Bahadur and Programme Officer of HR NSS Mr. Atul Sathe graced the occasion.

Dr. Shahani motivated the new members to work towards a better future and for quality community work. She also felicitated the members who had completed 240 hours of social service, with certificates recognized by the University of Mumbai. Vice - Principal Dr. Rekha Bahadur addressed the NSS volunteers regarding the importance and need for social service in today’s world. Mr. Sathe welcomed the new members and discussed the targets that HR NSS aims to achieve in the current academic year.

The various activities of HR NSS for the year 2013-14 were showcased for the new members. The new President Ms. Gauri Phutane and the core committee for the year 2014-15, were inducted. The ceremony ended with a vote of thanks by Secretary Esha Jain.

Women and Child Abuse Seminar

The NSS unit of H.R. College of Commerce & Economics attended ‘MAHILA SURAKSHA & SHISHU SURAKSHA’ - an awareness campaign for Women and Child Abuse initiated and proposed by the Mumbai Police.

Chief Guest Shri Rakesh Maria, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Mumbai unveiled the Coffee Table book comprising of posters and illustrations related to the topic of the awareness campaign.

A presentation about Thalassaemia was also presented by Dr. Sujata Sharma, Asst. Prof, Department of Paediatrics, Sion, Mumbai. The NSS volunteers of H.R. College participated in large numbers, making it a huge success.

Thalassemia Check - up

August 6, 2014

The NSS unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in collaboration with Rotary Club of Bombay Hanging Garden conducted a free Thalassemia Check - up for the degree college students of H.R. College.

Thalassemia major is a blood disorder which affects the production of normal haemoglobin due to which the patient needs frequent blood transfusions. The students were made aware of the dangers of the disease and the necessity of getting tested. Around 150 blood samples were collected and sent for testing.

Principal Dr. Indu Shahani, Vice Principals Dr. Rekha Bahadur and Mrs. Anila Pillai encouraged and supported the NSS volunteers in their efforts.

In the aim of The Rotary Club of Bombay Hanging Garden eradicating Thalassemia, the NSS unit of H.R. College contributed towards this noble cause.

Hiroshima Peace Rally

August 6, 2014                                                                                                             
The NSS unit of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics along with students from various colleges of Mumbai, Gandhian workers, peace activists, and NGOs campaigned for peace and a nuclear-free world at a peace rally conducted by the University of Mumbai from Azad Maidan to Flora Fountain, Mumbai.

The rally was organized to mark the 70th anniversary of the devastation against atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan during World War II.
Banners and placards bore slogans like No More Hiroshima, No To Bombs, Yes To Peace and We want Bread not Bombs.

Flag Selling Event

August 15, 2014

The NSS Unit of H.R. College of Commerce & Economics organized Flag Selling Event on the occasion of Independence Day at Marine Drive. The unit successfully sold 1000 flags which were individually handcrafted by mentally challenged children of ‘Hitesh Family Enrichment Foundation’.

The NSS unit actively participated in the patriotic celebrations also organized by the CASCADE Club and the Hindi Sahitya Parishad of the college.

Principal Dr. Indu Shahani’s enlightening words inspired the students to make each day an Independence Day.

Inauguration of “Community Policing”

An initiative by Mumbai Police in association with H.R. College of Commerce & Economics

August 23, 2014 

The Mumbai Police in association with H.R. College have come together in a first of its kind initiative of “Community Policing”, to garner student support, to assist help desks for children, women & senior citizens at Police Stations across the city. This initiative will help bridge the gap between the society & the public servicemen to enable a quick grievance redressal platform for senior citizens, children & women.

Mr. Rakesh Maria, Commissioner of Police and Vice Principal Dr. Rekha Bahadur inaugurated this initiative at the K.C. College auditorium with 800 students of 40 leading schools and colleges attending the event.

The participant registrations have been handed over to the Mumbai Police who will now allocate the students to Police Stations, according to the stations proximity to the student’s residence or educational institution; and direct them with a further action plan.

It is expected that dedicated student engagement in this initiative will result in them becoming effective agents of change in society. The students and the participating institutions will be given special certificates by the Mumbai Police.

NSS Unit – Blood Donation Drive

September 11, 2014

If you donate money, you give food. But if you donate blood, you give Life." 

 The NSS Unit of H.R. College of Commerce & Economics conducted a Blood Donation Drive at Adarsh Apartments, Santacruz in collaboration with Saifee Hospital on August 24 and at RBI Officers' Quarters, Dadar in collaboration with Bombay Hospital on September 6, 2014. The Programme Officer of HR-NSS Mr. Atul Sathe led the NSS volunteers by example, donating blood himself.

The officials of both the hospitals provided the donors with blood donor ID cards and certificates. The two drives were managed by extremely dedicated volunteers, hence led to the collection of 66 bottles of blood.

Swaccha Bharat Abhiyaan

 An initiative of PM Narendra Modi to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s  Birth Anniversary received a tremendous response from all over India. The NSS Unit of HR College also joined the drive for a clean India.

Promotion of sports and games has always been an important aspect at H.R. College since 1960. The young sportsmen of H.R. have left no stone unturned in ensuring that they take the H.R. flag to greater heights every year. 

The Sports Council organizes various sports events at the Intra-College and Inter-University level. The Sports Council comprises of HR students from F.Y.J.C. to M.Com. Tie-up / court facilities are provided to all students from all sports. The Council also provides sports equipments and professional coaches to train the students. The college also organizes extra tutoring facilities to the sports persons.

The college has excelled in squash, table tennis, water polo, football, cricket and badminton and won several national and international awards.

The Students’ Council

The Students’ Council is the apex working body of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics which aims at serving not only oneself but the community at large. Having faith in our abilities and the zest to strive hard to achieve grandeur is what each member of the council exhibits.

The council hosts the biggest mathematics and statistics inter-collegiate event - Numero Uno; being socially inclined individuals the council also undertakes numerous social initiatives like Blood Donation Drives, teaching the underprivileged and organize events like the Carnival - The Freshers’ Party and T.Y. Farewell. Being a part of this renowned institute, the council participates in a number of inter-collegiate festivals and brings laurels to the college. 

Led by the General Secretary, Prakhar Agrawal, under constant guidance of Professor-in-Charge Ms. Shubhada Kanchan and a team of 24 Core Committee members and a Working Committee of over 100 members, the Students’ Council continues to be of supreme support to the college in all its endeavors. 

It is one of the few student bodies recognized by the University of Mumbai. Achieving excellent academic standards and creating opportunities for the all round development through sports and cultural activities; transferring the responsibility of the learning to the learner, is what the council does; thus, helping this great hub of innovation and success, looking forward to a magnificent year and reach higher pinnacles of triumph.

PSDS Orientation

The Public Speaking & Debating Society is a Literary Club which organizes various events like seminars on CV writing and resume writing, events like extempore speaking competitions, JAM, essay writing etc.  The Public Speaking and Debating Society helps young students of our college to voice their opinion and stand out from the crowd.

More than hundred new members were inducted in the club during the orientation programme. Ms. Shailja Mulay, Moderator of the HSC Board conducted a seminar on 'Posture & Body Language' on this occasion. The programme was graced by Vice Principal Dr. Rekha Bahadur.

Inter Collegiate Participation

Throughout the year right from June and onwards, members of PSDS represented HR College at various debating events such as the Malhar, British Parliamentary Debate Tournament, KC College Model United Nations, Tsunami Youth Parliament and various other debating events at cultural and finance and economics fests across the city and even beyond. PSDS participated in almost 50 events out of which 35 were won by our members.

How to Prepare a Resume

The Public Speaking and Debating Society and Maths Club jointly conducted a seminar on "How to Prepare a Resume." The students  were privileged to be guided by a communication specialist, Kevin Marshall who has been teaching  verbal skills for entrance examinations like GMAT, GRE, SAT, CAT, CET, Bank PO and others for over ten years. Mr Marshall elaborated on the importance of writing a good resume. He also showed some sample resumes to focus on common mistakes that students make while preparing resume. This seminar proved to be extremely helpful to more than 75 students who attended it for writing their resumes for their placements.
