Prarambh is a small volunteer-run non-profit organization started 6 years ago with a mission to improve the lives of less privileged children by helping them with basic life education. Prarambh hopes to give these children what is currently missing in their schools and home. This includes not only basic education but also individual attention to help them become educated and responsible citizens of their community. Prarambh was started by a group of young professionals in 2005. Prarambh, after being run for 6 years from a corporation school in Parihar Chowk, moved to IISER Pune in 2011. Two of the founding members Ashish Srivastava and Kranti Karandikar continue to be actively associated with the program. This program happens every Sunday (starting 10am) in the IISER new campus. Most of the children attending Prarambh live in bastis around Ambedkar Chowk. They attend municipal schools in the area, but are in many cases lacking in English and math skills that Prarambh focuses on. Prarambh is run entirely by volunteers, guided by a core team of volunteers.

Events
“If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music." Albert Einstein
Activities
Aaroha members regularly interact with each and have musical rendezvous in our music room. A lot of concerts and activities are often organized on campus and we receive enthusiastic participation. There is an active budding Acapella group in IISER that is managed by Vrushali Rao and Parijat Banerjee who are BS-MS students and coordinators of the club. (Please contact them for further details).
Disha is a voluntary organization of IISER Pune students working for a social cause. The primary goal of Disha is to promote “thinking beyond self” among the entire student community through actually working at the grassroots for bringing about change in the society. The work so far has really provided a very different perspective to a lot of us and inspired us to be active contributors, and not passive observers (or critics) in this process. Disha aims at generating trigger points for its volunteers- through work- to inspire and create such leaders who will have the courage to take up the real challenges of the society on their shoulders, work hard to find the real solutions and bring their dreams to reality. Disha, which started around five years back informally by a few IISER students in the form of teaching a few kids from Someshwarwadi (a settlement nearby IISER campus), has now attained a certain organizational structure within IISER. Working at slums and villages nearby Pune, all Disha activities are primarily aimed at children with “education” (not just conventional school education but in a broader sense) at the center. The regular activities include helping the kids with the school curriculum, teaching in innovative ways using hands-on activities and games, conducting projects involving learning of new skills and also self- employment generating activities. Each place where Disha is working has different objectives and activities planned accordingly, based on the situation there. These activities are coordinated and conducted entirely by the students of IISER Pune, who form the team of Disha. Disha aims to build a strong, robust and sustainable network of such groups across the youth, who would like to use their energy and intellect to effectively respond to various social challenges and bring about change. We believe that every youth does have the fire in him/her to do good for the society, nation, world and essentially everyone. The lack of vision of the way probably hinders the active contribution by most of us. This is hence an appeal to that fire- the purest part of a human being- within everyone of us to be a part of this process!
The Drama Club over the years:
Drama club was instituted by the very first batch of IISER BS-MS program (2006 batch). It made progress in its own right and went on to win the Stage Play competition in Oasis – Cultural Fest BITS Pilani in the year 2009. This benchmark has been maintained over the years. Drama club has given regular performances in the Karavaan Showcase every year. A couple of years ago, we introduced the concept of “Mad-ads” in the Karavaan Showcase which went on to become viral on youtube. Last year, we performed out very first mime act inspired by the world famous Charlie Chaplin and our first Street Play to be out in the open.?
Past one year:
We have grown and progressed a lot in the past one year and expanded in diversity and creativity alike. Through our street plays we have tried to address issues related to the 'sab chalta hai' attitude of Indians, social and sexual taboos existing in the Indian society, and most recently student life at IISER (especially for the newbies ;) ). 'The New Radiation' was our very first stage play in the Dr C V Raman auditorium. Through it, the audience witnessed the unraveling of the Raman effect, an important scientific discovery that still inspires and motivates us all. 'Ummeed', an entirely first years' production was a huge success, too. Well, why won't it be? The 2014 batch nails it when it comes to acting! We didn't stop here. An enthralling, vibrant and realistic silent play was showcased during 'Sea Minor', a cultural festival at IISER-P that celebrated confluence of dance, drama and music. Ever seen mathematics being incorporated in an act? The π-day saw a blend of drama and the thrill of mathematics.

IISER Pune Linux Users Group (Iplug) is the youngest of all student groups in our institute. As the name suggests it deals with the Linux operating system. Don't think that its a group for people who uses Linux, its a group which is also meant for people who would like to know about the Linux Operating System. The IISER Pune Linux Users Group (Iplug), aims at introducing people to the world of free and opensource softwares. Iplug was formed on 2nd of February 2014 with help and support of Dr.Suhita Nadkarni. We believe that computing should be available free for everyone. We help anyone to install the Linux operating system and teach to make the most out of it. There will be Iplug meetings on every possible sundays at 6:00 PM at LHC. The first programme conducted by Iplug was the “Linux installation drive” on 23rd March 2014. We will hopefully conduct “Linux installation drive 2” this semester. We believe that everyone should at least get a glimpse of the art of scientific computing. So Iplug is planning to conduct introductory tutorials on programming in python. The Faculty coordinator of Iplug is Dr.Suhita Nadkarni. The current student coordinator of Iplug is Visakh Narayanan who is a student of IISER-P batch 2012.
The Literary Club was started in the Fall Semester of 2013, by the BS-MS batch of 2012.It has held several interesting and creative activities since. They also played an active part in Karavaan, organising two Inter-college events (Pot-pourri and JAM followed by BOL). This year we will look to continue the same, and also incorporate bright, new ideas.
Mimamsa is a National level annual Science Quiz organized by the students of IISER Pune for students at the undergraduate level. It is a two-stage event : the Prelims - a written exam with sections from the 4 major disciplines of Science, takes place in January at several centres across India. The top 4 teams selected through the Prelims qualify for the Mains - which is comprised of brain-racking quizzing sessions spread over a pleasant February weekend. The questions are designed to investigate, rather than to simply have an answer, and specifically to promote debate and discussion among teams and the judges.Mimamsa is arguably one of the toughest Science Quizzes at the Undergraduate Level, and tests the concepts of its participants, rather than simply facts, leading its witnesses to go back to the basics and unravel the science behind the science we study. Mimamsa was conceptualised and founded by Dr. Sutirth Dey - a faculty member in the Biology Department at IISER Pune. The underlying philosophy behind the quiz lies in putting forth arguments and counter-arguments; to arrive at an answer based on deduction and logic, and to debate upon the answers given by other teams. The belief is that questions in science do not demand “correct” answers - they require original thinking. The first edition of Mimamsa was organised on January 10, 2009, in Pune, as a small inter-college event. We have come a long way since then, and evolved considerably over time. The 2016 edition of the Prelims saw a participation of 231 teams in 10 centres across India – Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bhopal and Tirupati. The 2017 chapter will have a total of 12 centers across India - Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bhopal, Tirupati, Vadodara, Bhubaneshwar and Kochi.
Rules & Guidelines for participants
Prutha was started by the batch of 2010 and is a group of people interested in increasing awareness about our impact on the environment, and making IISER Pune in general more eco-friendly. Join us! There's a lot to do, and we'll have fun along the way. PRUTHA is a group of people at IISER Pune who are interested in environmental activities, primarily in making the campus more eco-friendly and increasing awareness about green issues. It was begun by members of the 2008 and 2010 batch who felt that the importance given to the environment needs to be further emphasized, and that it is essential to be conscious of the effect we have on it. Since then, Prutha has carried out several awareness activities and attempted to implement ideas on campus aimed at reducing the waste generated.
Past Activities
Here's a list of things Prutha has done or is doing:
1. Spreading the Mug Bug: We've sold custom-designed mugs in association with IISER Pune's esrtwhile newsletter, Sentience, to discourage the use of paper cups.
2. ESR Participation: We participated in the Environment Status report of Ward 10 (Pashan) done in the first few months of 2013. An Environment Status Report (ESR) is a survey/ analysis report that is made every few years to evaluate the grade of the environment and used to make further layouts for the city plan. IISER students, organised by Prutha volunteers, counted traffic of different kinds on Pashan road in slots of one hour as part of this project, which was organised by residents of Panchavati and the Centre for Development Studies and Activities. Students who participated received a certificate for their effort from the CDSA, and got the chance to listen to Dr. Aneeta Benninger, a noted geologist, speak.
3. Clean-up Drives: We've held two on campus (and collected unbelievable amounts of garbage!), and one at Sinhagad Fort so far.
4. Scavenger Hunt: About 40 people participated in this event, held in April 2014, at Panchavati. In teams of three, they scoured the hill for garbage, and, unfortunately, did not have to look very far. We collected more than 100 kg of trash that was sent to be recycled, and much more that we removed from the hill. Prizes were given to three teams that had collected the most trash.
5. Paper Waste Collection: This is ongoing. We collect paper waste from all over campus, sort them into one-sided (reusable) and two-sided (recyclable) sections, and sell the latter to a paper vendor.
The Quiz Club at IISER Pune, since its inception in 2013, has been conducting quizzes on Monday nights on various topics ranging from sports and media to music and technology. The major events it hosted last year was the Karavaan Quiz in the Fall Semester and the Quiz League in the Spring Semester whose final event was conducted by the Boat Club Quiz Club from College of Engineering, Pune. The club presently has Dr. Anisa Chorwadwala as its faculty coordinator and 13 student members from the 2012 and 2013 batches. The Quiz Club achieved the most voluntarily participation among all the clubs; nearly about 100 participants in one of its Monday Night Quizzes. The club runs on the voluntary participation of the IISER students who willingly come up to conduct quizzes. We are looking forward to see you all in large numbers soon!
The science club of IISER Pune complements the vision of IISER Pune by promoting science outside the classroom. The important club activities include Nobel Laureate Talks, Colloquiums, workshops and field trips. Everyone is invited to the weekly meetings. You will be notified via emails and posters.
Karavaan had its humble beginnings in 2008 as an intra-college cultural fest of IISER Pune. In the last eight years, Karavaan has grown by leaps and bounds to become a major student run inter collegiate fest in Pune. Broadening its scope in 2015, Karavaan incorporated social and scientific programmes along with cultural ones. A wide variety of events such as Pronite, Showcase, Leadership Conclave, science workshops and social awareness drives are all part of the rich extravaganza that is Karavaan Lewis Carroll"s "Alice"s Adventures in Wonderland" opened the door to a magnificent world of children"s literature. Though nonsensical and illogical, it has never ceased to amaze people of all ages. Taking on " Adventures in Wonderland" as the theme this year, K"16 aspires to recreate memorable elements from the tale and put forth a unique rendition of the evergreen fantasy fable. We thus assure you that the journey down the rabbit hole at K"16 will be an enchanting and peppy adventure for all. Ever since its conception in 2008, Karavaan boasts of Pronite, a grand event that attract attention and participation from all over the country.
