About Tata Institute of Fundamental Research
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research is a deemed university awarding masters and doctoral degrees. The institute is a National Centre of the Government of India under the Department of Atomic Energy. TIFR Mumbai was established with the support of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust under Dr. Homi Bhabha’s vision.
TIFR has been marked as one of the best institutions and accredited ‘A+’ grade by NAAC. Located at Navy Nagar, Colaba, Mumbai, the institute has an affiliated campus in Serilingampally near Hyderabad. Research at TIRF is distributed across three schools:

Tata Institute Fundamental Research Mumbai Eligibility Criteria for 2024
- Students need to have completed their graduation with required subjects to get admission in postgraduate courses. For getting admission in Ph. D, students must have completed their postgraduation in a relevant stream from a recognized university.
- The institute also conducts an Entrance Test for admission to PhD and Integrated M.Sc-Ph.D. courses.
Tata Institute Fundamental Research Mumbai 2024-24 Admission Dates
TIFR Mumbai results of the Nationwide Entrance Examination were declared on 2nd February 2023, and some students were short-listed. Interviews of these short-listed students are to be held from Mar-May 2023. For more details, students can visit the official website.
Tata Institute Fundamental Research Mumbai Entrance Exams
For final TIFR Mumbai admission, the institute conducts an online entrance test (GS Entrance Exam) followed by an interview of the short-listed candidates. However, if the candidate has a valid GATE score, they can be exempted from the TIFR entrance exam. In case, a student appears for the TIFR Mumbai entrance exam and also submits the GATE score, better performance will be considered for admission.
Tata Institute Fundamental Research Mumbai Application Process 2024
The TIFR Mumbai application process is easy and can be done both online as well as manually.
For online applications, students can find the link on the official website. Candidates applying for the courses are required to carefully read all the instructions before filling out the form. They cannot register multiple times for the same course while filling out the form. TIFR Mumbai application fee can be paid online via internet banking/ Debit Card/ Credit Card or Demand Draft. If a student is paying via Demand Draft, then he/she will have to mention the name, reference code, and telephone number behind the DD.
For offline applications, students are required to send a request for an application form. The request for the application form must be made along with a self-addressed stamped envelope.
- For Biology- National Centre for Biological Sciences UAS- GKVK Campus, Bellary Road, Bangalore 560065.
- For other subjects except for Science Education- University Cell, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Homi Bhabha Road, Colaba, Mumbai 400005.
Students applying for courses in the above-mentioned subjects must send the complete application form along with DD and two passport size photographs to the address mentioned above.
- For Science Education- Students applying for the courses in this particular subject will have to visit the HBCSE website.
Tata Institute Fundamental Research Mumbai Application Fees
The Tata Institute Fundamental Research Mumbai application fee is non-refundable.
- For online applications, male candidates will have to pay Rs 600, and female candidates will have to pay Rs 100.
- For manual applications, male candidates will have to pay Rs 650, and female candidates will have to pay Rs 100.

The Tata Institute Fundamental Research placement has options both in the corporate and public sector as well as entrepreneurship. The placement cell conducts TIFR Mumbai placements every year for the final year students. As per the NIRF report, the TIFR Mumbai placement placed 14 post-graduate course students, out of which 12 received a median salary of 3.60 lacs INR per annum. The median salary offered to students after completing a postgraduate 3-year course was 4.80 lacs INR per annum.
In addition, the TIFR Mumbai placement cell organizes various activities such as career counseling, group discussions, public speaking, and mock interviews.

In addition, the trained medical staff at the institution’s hostel is always on call to handle any emergency or major medical problem.

The main aim of the TIFR Scholarship Program is to encourage the students. Many bodies are helping the institution to deliver the scholarships, such as Doncaster Foundation, the Webb Family, and Eventi Capital Partners.
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research scholarship facilities for PG and doctoral programs help the candidates with financial assistance and reward academic performances. The scholarships are given below:
- Ph. D scholarship:
IFR Mumbai Ph. D students receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 25,000, which is increased to Rs 28,000 after the registration.
Integrated Ph. D students receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 16,000 for the first year. When the performance of the candidate is satisfactory, the fellowship is enhanced to Rs 25,000 per month. After the registration for Ph. D, the fellowship is increased to Rs 28,000 per month.
- PG (M. Sc) Scholarship
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Mumbai M. Sc students receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 12,000.
