Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, which is popularly known as IP University, is one of the popular universities located in New Delhi, India. Named after the ancient mythological city of Indraprastha from the epic Mahabharata, it was later officially renamed as Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) after the tenth Sikh Guru Gobind Singh. Established in 1998 by the Government of NCT of Delhi, under the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University Act (1998), IPU is recognised by the UGC, AICTE, NAAC, and is accredited by the BCI, NCTE, and COA. NAAC accredited the varsity with a CGPA of 3.56 (on 7 point scale) at A++ Grade valid from February 14, 2023.
IPU has 14 university schools (colleges) out of which 12 are on the main university campus in Dwarka and 2 colleges, USAR and USDI are on the new campus at East Delhi. Apart from that, there are more than 100 government and private colleges that are affiliated to IP University. The curriculum focuses on professional education through UG, PG, diploma, and doctorate courses in the streams of engineering, management, law, medicine, education, pharmacy, nursing, etc. Admission to IPU is done through entrance exams like CAT, CLAT, and IPU CET.
While considered a reputed and popular university amidst its parallel universities, is IPU really living up to its image? Let us delve into the various aspects of the institute and find out the reality.
IPU has been featured in the NIRF rankings year after year. The university’s position dropped significantly in the 2020 rankings but since then, it has shown gradual but consistent improvement.

Our Take:
Apart from being included in the NIRF rankings continuously, IPU has also been recognised by other ranking agencies which clearly indicates that the university’s popularity is not a hoax. However, it is yet to outperform its last best which was the 66th rank in 2019. For this, the university administration needs to take effective measures which can include strengthening the course structure, investing in modern teaching aids, hiring more faculty, etc.
IPU offers courses at bachelor, masters, and doctorate levels in many streams. Based on whether or not they meet the eligibility criteria, students have to undergo the admission process of their desired course which usually includes an entrance test.
There are 14 colleges of IPU on and around the university’s main campus and more than a hundred other colleges are affiliated to it. The 14 colleges include:
Many popular courses like MBA, BA LL.B, B.Tech, B.Arch, BAMS, B.Ed, LL.M, BCA, BBA, etc are offered at IP University. The course fees of some of the most sought after degrees have been given below:

Out Take:
IPU certainly provides the courses which have the highest number of applicants in the country and the course fee is somewhere on the positive side if you compare it with the other private institutions. The course curriculum is on par with other leading universities such as DU. However, as per the reviews of students on Quora, the university needs to include some modern topics like programming, data learning, etc. in its offered degrees. Some students have also mentioned that the degrees are not quite challenging and they can score well easily. With new-age courses gaining quick momentum in today’s tech-driven world, it is essential for universities like IPU to expand their pedagogy so that students can be industry-ready during placements.
As per the Yearly Status Report of IP University for the academic session 2020-21, there were a total of 3,739 enrolled students and 199 full-time teachers (out of 325 sanctioned posts). The student-teacher ratio of IPU is around 18:1 and the faculty is well experienced in their respective fields. There are no stern rules regarding student attendance but as per the students, some teachers are known to be strict about their classes.
IPU has 111 affiliated institutes; of these, 87 are self financed and 24 are owned and managed by the Govt. of NCT of Delhi/ Govt. of India. In these affiliated institutions, 176 academic programmes are offered with an intake of 28,000+ students with a total university strength of 93,000+.
Our Take:
IPU boasts qualified faculty members across its departments and trained professionals are also part of the administration. Students have mostly given positive feedback for the teachers, albeit with a few exceptions. With a few changes in the staff and curriculum, IPU can undoubtedly expand its potential manyfold.
IPU has a vast alumni network that spans in various fields such as politics, Bollywood, singing, athletics, etc. Some of the notable alumni of IP University are Tapsee Pannu (actor), Gaurav Sharma (author and novelist), Gaurav Gogoi (politician and social worker), Mohamed Irfaan Ali (politician, President of Guyana from 2020), Guneet Monga (film producer), Manish Singh (racewalker), Devika Vaid (model and beauty queen), Saurabh Bhardwaj (politician), Prachi Tehlan (former netball and basketball player, actor), and Anupam Amod (singer).

The main campus of IPU is located in the Dwarka area of Delhi over an area of 78 acres, making it among the largest in Delhi. Out of the 14 colleges of IPU, 12 are situated on the main campus and the other 2 are on the new campus at East Delhi.
Our Take:
The infrastructure of IPU is undoubtedly a strong asset of the university. The on-campus hostels provide all the facilities and several reasonably-priced shops are also available. Furthermore, if students do not get accommodation in the hostel, they can easily find a PG or hostel nearby since the university is in a prime location. Many shopping malls, eateries, cafes, etc. are a stone's throw away and students can also find book shops and markets nearby.
IPU has a Centralised Career Guidance and Placement Cell that assists students in the entire placement process. Each college under IPU has a team of placement coordinators who are responsible for the smooth functioning of campus placements.
For the placement of students at IPU, the Career Guidance and Placement Cell first invites companies and organisations to hire from the university’s cohort. They coordinate and set dates for the recruitment process which usually includes tests and interviews. Some companies also organise Pre-Placement Talks (PPT) for students who qualify the eligibility to be recruited and meet all necessary academic conditions. In the selection process, the acumen and aptitude of students are tested through technical questions, English tests, interviews, HR rounds, etc. after which the companies release the list of shortlisted candidates.
IPU has collaborated with several leading companies such as Cisco Systems, IBM, Intel, TCS, etc. These, along with other MNCs and organisations, visit the university for its annual campus placement drive. IPU also has collaborations with Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) ISRO, Dept. of Space, MaulanaAzad Institute of Dental Sciences, HATCH India, Blue Prism, National Informatics Centre, ANG Partners & Advocates, VGC Law Firm, The Institute of Company Secretaries of India, Cracow University of Economics (Poland), UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH), Oxfordshire, etc.

Several companies hire interns from IP University, usually for the duration of a month or two. Based on their work experience and performance during the internship, students can also bag a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO) from the companies. Some leading recruiters hiring interns from IPU include Amazon, Travclan, Adobe, Cvent, Tata 1mg, Mobikwik, CarDekho, Publicis Sapient, etc. Here are a few of the companies that recruited interns from IPU in 2022 along with their offered stipend.
IPU fairs well in maintaining diversity across its colleges. A certain percentage of seats are reserved for students hailing from Delhi, candidates belonging to reserved categories, minority groups etc. While students from other regions of the country also apply to IP University, there are fewer applicants from states that are not in north India.

The male to female student ratio at USICT of IPU is quite poor with 4-5 girls in a class of 60 students. The number of female students in some B.Tech degrees such as CSE, ECE, IT etc are higher than other specialisations like Mechanical or Chemical Engineering. However, other departments at IPU have a more diverse cohort of students.
Our Take:
The student diversity at IPU is quite inclusive albeit the majority of the seats are reserved for students with domicile in Delhi, hence leaving few seats for applicants from other states. The male-female student ratio across most departments is decent. The total number of female students in colleges like USICT is low but that can also be attributed to the fact that fewer females opt for engineering as compared to males in general. Having said that, the university can assuredly take constructive measures to improve its situation with respect to state-wise and gender-wise diversity.
The faculty members at IPU comprise teaching staff which include permanent, temporary, and part-time teachers. The university also has non-teaching and technical staff to assist in maintaining the university, laboratories, etc. Most of the permanent professors at IPU hold a Ph.D in their respective fields.
As per the report published by IPU in December 2022, the university has a total of 108 teachers, 272 non-teaching staff, and 63 technical staff. Almost all the temporary teachers have a masters degree.
Our Take:
IPU takes pride in its faculty which is experienced, well-trained, and has expertise in their respective fields. The university also invites feedback from students through forms that can be submitted online/ offline. Many students have given positive feedback to the faculty at IPU. However, as per Quora reviews, there are a few teachers who maintain strict adherence to attendance, conduct many tests, and are not updated with the latest technical developments. In order to uphold its standard, IPU needs to ensure all departments are well-equipped with faculty and other aid to impart education.
The main campus of GGSIPU is located in Dwarka, New Delhi. It is a residential and Industrial neighbourhood in the South-western region of the national capital of New Delhi. IPU is close to the Indira Gandhi International Airport as well as the NDLS railway station. Additionally, the Millenium City of Gurgaon is also easily accessible from the university.
Several metro stations are just a kilometre away from IP University and public transport also plies throughout the day. There are many cafes and restaurants nearby and students can also get food delivered through Swiggy/ Zomato etc.
Our Take:
IPU is definitely located in a prime area of the capital of India. Students have easy access to markets, shopping malls, restaurants, pharmacies, hospitals, and other place for all their necessities. Ola and Uber services are available throughout the day and students also have the option of using public transport which connects the entire city. Proximity to the metro station is another advantage of the campus location. To incorporate more students and courses, IPU is expanding its premises and a new campus was established in Vishwas Nagar, East Delhi in 2021. Students who do not get hostel facilities at IPU can easily rent a room in the PGs and hostels available nearby.
Since Dwarka is one of the chief areas of Delhi, there is usually heavy traffic during peak hours. Metro stations also get quite crowded at specific times of the day. Delhi is also infamous for its air pollution, especially during the onset of winter.
In many aspects, IPU stands true to its popularity by offering in-demand courses and an amalgamation of cultural and technical knowledge. Its infrastructure and facilities provided for students are appreciable. However, there are some areas in which IP University can improve, which include Government funding, physical expansion, industry sponsored projects, increasing hostels, etc.
The limited international outreach and visibility of IPU cloud its popularity a little. Due to financial restraints and lack of funding, the university has limited outreach to attract students from developed and developing countries. Limited hostel accommodation is also a problem considering the total student strength of the university.
While IPU attracts substantial grants from the government sector, it is limited when it comes to funding for the establishment of a Research Chair from non-government sources. This greatly impacts the academic and research endeavours at the university. Additionally, IPU accepts that the protection of knowledge was not focused on in the past leading to the non-filing of patents and copy-rights despite commendable research footprints.

Final Verdict: IP University is a great option for students who cannot make it to the premier colleges for their desired degrees. Although competitive, the admission process of IPU is not as tough as that of the IITs, IIMs, NLUs etc. and the cutoff scores are lower. The university also encourages the participation of students in internships and extracurricular activities. IPU offers good placement opportunities to its students and has established its name in the industry.
Students who are interested in pursuing certain new-age courses as opposed to the traditional programmes might not find the ideal path at IPU. Apart from MBA, B.Tech and LL.B placements, IP University does not have decent statistics for campus placements of other courses. Therefore, students pursuing other courses from IPU mostly have to apply for jobs without much assistance from the university.
