Mahendra Arts and Science College was founded in 1999-2000 with the affiliation of Periyar University, Salem. The college is run by the Mahendra Educational Trust, founded in 1978 by Sri M.G. Bharathkumar. Mahendra Arts and Science College Namakkal has received international certification for ISO 9001:2008 and the Environmental Management System ISO 14001:2004. The college is an autonomous institution that the University Grants Commission recognises. The Distance Education Council has accredited Mahendra Arts and Science College.

At the beginning of the college, only the Arts Block existed, and later added, the Biotechnology Block and spacious and well-designed laboratories.
Currently, the infrastructure and facilities available on the MCAS campus are sufficient to conduct high-tech research. A new building is being built specifically for the department of Biosciences. Some of the facilities of MCAS campus include well-ventilated classrooms, recreational areas, a hostel facility for boys and girls, indoor and outdoor games, a well-stocked library, continuous internet connectivity, medical facilities, etc.
Academic facilities include classrooms outfitted with cutting-edge audio-visual technology and a well-stocked library, laboratories, and computer centre. They can also use digital library services available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A new computer laboratory for student training has been constructed in the new laboratory building and computer centre.
