MERF Institute of Speech and Hearing admissions are offered to interested candidates on the basis of their marks in their last qualifying exam. The four-year BASLP course consists of three years of theory studies, clinical exposure, and a year of specialised clinical training as an internship. The BASLP degree is offered by the university following successful completion of the internship programme and passing all three years of exams administered by the Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R. Medical University.

The students complete a Research project (Dissertation) as part of the two-year curriculum, under the direction of the faculty in their area of specialisation, and submit it to the university three months before the start of the second-year examination. The university also evaluates the dissertation.
