Students Activities & Clubs

Technical club -

Founded in 2012, the Civil Engineering Students' Technical Club (CEST) club of NIT Rourkela aims to provide a platform for the students to think, reflect and wonder about the phenomena involved in civil engineering. Most students generally lose their interest in engineering and focus on grades during their studies. This Club desires to reinforce the knowledge and excitement they attained in their classes through interesting activities which include workshops, seminars, technical events, projects, tutorials etc. The students expose themselves to different areas of civil engineering and also engage in teamwork learning and helping others. The club also propagates its ideas to the students and organises many events in the institute, which includes both live and online events. CEST Club appeals to all those enthusiastic students and engineers to take part in the activities related to civil engineering and help the society in the development of engineering and technology.

Rotary Club -

The student chapter of the international organization, Rotary International: Rotaract Club is one of social services club in NITR.

The club was allotted a meager sum of INR 15000 at the start of the academic year which fell short considering the number of events the club organized. However, extra funds were allotted as and when necessary by the faculty advisor of the club, Prof. Susmita Das.

Like every year, the club organized a “clothes collection drive” in the month of August in which they collected the old and unused clothes from the faculty and staff quarters. Once, the clothes were filtered and segregated, they were donated to Shanti Bhawan, an old-age home. The club also set up a few performances to keep the residents entertained. In the month of October, the club was instrumental in organizing the blood donation camp in association with NITRAA and Red Cross which had a turn-out of more than 150 people.

Entrepreneurship Club -

NIT Rourkela has seen many successful entrepreneurs since it has been founded and it has witnessed a rich start-up culture emerging through the years. E-cell is one such club which aspires to actively contribute to these numbers by helping forge future leaders in the field of business and entrepreneurship.

Its primary aim is to encourage innovation, incubation, and entrepreneurship. It conducts events like a business plan, product development, case studies where the students have an opportunity to present their start-up ideas and showcase their problem-solving skills. They also get proper guidance from renowned professionals from the business and start-up world. Regular mentorship sessions and workshops are conducted in order to stay updated about the modern technology and their use in the fields such as digital marketing and data sciences. Weekly interactive sessions are conducted in order to spread knowledge about new concepts and even group discussions are encouraged, which is open to all.

E- Cell has one major event conducted every semester, along with few other events that the students actively participated in.

Art & Craft Club -

The fourth installment of VIVID was held from the 31st of March to 2nd April, 2017 in Rajendra Mishra Exhibition Hall. It is the annual photographic exhibition and photography workshop organized by Third Eye, the photography club of NIT Rourkela. Third Eye is famed for being a club with an ensemble of the most talented minds on campus, and putting up an excellent display of talent at everything they organize, be it a workshop or an exhibition.

The club was founded on November 1, 2012, by Rahul Nair, Arjun Kesava, and Abhimanyu Kadiyan. Ever since they’ve strived to learn and share their knowledge of the art of photography. They’re a mainstream club with more than 30 members now, who can be spotted everywhere on campus, religiously working day in and day out covering fests, organizing photo walks for its members and capturing moments too precious to lose.

Technical club -

SPAWN, a club under Technical Society, SAC was founded in the year 2011, with a goal to create an environment of programming in NIT Rourkela by gathering people with skills in the fields of Security, Programming, Android, Web Design and Networking – (hence the name).

SPAWN conducts classes on Data structure, competitive coding, and programming languages for the students of our institute. They also established a “Hardware Museum” under the guidance of their faculty advisor Prof. Pankaj Kumar Sa, which was inaugurated by our former director Prof. Sunil Kumar Sarangi, in the year 2016. The museum is not yet open to the public. The club is planning on organizing an exhibition, where they will showcase computer hardware that they use every day, starting from the old models used in the 1990s to the high-end ones used now. They also organized classes on C, C++, MATLAB and Data structure with Bhubaneswar based computer training organizations like Lakshya and LIT this year.

SPAWN was given a budget of INR 30,000 this year. Though this is a fairly good budget for any coding club, they hope that the budget goes up to at least INR 40,000 next year, considering their work in the hardware museum. They plan on investing the money in buying more hardware for the museum. This year, they faced problems in settling bills and getting money in time.

Technical club -

Catering to the need of keeping up with rapid development in technology in recent times, and in inspiring those around to discover their passion for the same, Microsoft Campus Club has lived up to the status of being one of the pioneers as a technical club of NIT Rourkela. Founded on the first of August, 2005, it has come a long way from being a localised organisation to one with nationally recognised events, while establishing similar clubs in other engineering colleges in Rourkela.

Quiz Club -

The Quizzing fraternity is indeed a unique arena, where despite existing prejudices intelligence is not the only deciding criterion. One such club that strives to make a place for itself in the national circuit is Inquizzitive.

Inquizzitive was established in the year 2009 by a bunch of students who were passionate about quizzing and wanted everyone to recognize it’s importance. It was formally registered as a part of the Literary and Cultural Society, and the club faced many hurdles during its establishment. There was a shortage of funds, the club members were not properly aware of the various quizzing competitions of national level and there was a general lack of exposure in the national quizzing circuit. Although there was no special allotment of a budget for events during fests, their annual budget is amounted to INR 35,000 out of which INR 33,000 was used for the conduction of Qurios and the remaining INR 2,000 for Jnanagni.

Social Club -

In a technical institute like ours, there are hidden talents amongst everyone. Some are writers, some artists, some singers and almost everyone a foodie! Katkam Srinivas, who is the founder of Srinivasa Lunch Room (SLR), along with M. N. Anandbabu as their mentor, established chef’s club three years ago. The club has come a long way and has had its shares of difficulties. Team MM tried to find out what happens when chefs get together when we caught up with Radha Krishna, the Vice President of the club.

Initially, when the club was founded, around 90 people had come for the orientations and inductions. After the process, 40 members were inducted into the club and have maintained 30 members as their baseline, ever since. The club started making its name from the Multi-Ethnic Fest in 2013; in which it set up a food stall and provided cuisines related to the zone which was performing that day. The delicacies on the foreign zone helped the club reach new heights as the member named Abdul Hadi Sharifi, had everyone licking their fingertips with the diversity in the food prepared. After that, the club set up food stalls in NU for the same academic year, and the trend continued in the coming years.
