Central University of Tibetan Studies Course

The Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (Deemed University) (CIHTS) in Sarnath, Varanasi, is the only institution of its kind in the country. The Institute was established in 1967. The Institute was suggested during a meeting between India's first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, with the purpose of teaching the young Tibetan Diaspora and those from India's Himalayan border areas who share Tibet's religion, culture, and language.

To be considered for admission to the P.M. first year at this Institute, candidates must have finished class VIII in any accredited school and have Tibetan language competency comparable to class VIII levels. Candidates must also be fluent in Hindi or English at the eighth-grade level.
