Updated Information for Visiting Students - The admissions page has been updated with new information regarding policies and procedures for visiting students. Visiting students can spend one or more semesters at CMI and attend regular courses, subject to faculty consent and class size constraints. Note that no stipend will be provided, and hostel accommodation is not available. Interested students should email the CMI Admissions Committee with their academic background and course preferences. CMI typically accepts visiting students who have completed two years of an undergraduate program, and a formal letter from their home institution is required.

Updated Reservation Policy for Admissions - The updated reservation policy for admissions is now available on the Chennai Mathematical Institute website. This policy outlines the mechanisms for ensuring reservation for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Classes Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL), Physically Challenged (PC), and Economically Weaker Section (EWS) categories as per the Government of India guidelines. The admission process includes a written examination, and for some courses, an oral examination follows. Candidates from reserved categories will have relaxed qualifying scores and must provide appropriate documentation at the time of admission. Detailed guidelines and certificate formats for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, PC, and EWS candidates are provided on the website.
Entrance Examination Results 2025 Published - The results for the Entrance Examination held on May 24, 2025, have been published. Students can check their results using the link provided. Qualify for PhD Physics via JEST, UGC-CSIR NET, GATE - Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Physics can qualify for the interview based on their performance in JEST, UGC-CSIR NET, or GATE, without taking the CMI entrance examination. More details will be provided when applications for 2025 open.
Interviews for PhD Mathematics - Interviews for PhD Mathematics (applicants with NBHM PhD fellowship) will occur from 28-30 April 2025. For PhD Mathematics (via CMI entrance exam) interviews are scheduled for 3-4 July 2025.

Entrance Examination and Selection Criteria - The entrance examinations for various programs will take place on Saturday, 24 May 2025, at designated centers across the country. PhD Admission Pathways: Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics - Candidates can qualify for the PhD programme in Mathematics via NBHM, for Computer Science through JEST and GATE, and for Physics through JEST, UGC-CSIR NET, or GATE without writing the entrance examination. Chennai Mathematical Institute is a public-private partnership research institute and college in Chennai, India. The institute receives most of the funding from the private sector with equally substantial financial support from The Government of India. The institute was established in 1989. The institute was founded by southern petrochemical Industries Corporation (SPIC).
The SPIC Science Foundation was set up in 1986 to foster the growth of science and technology in India. In 1989 it was renamed the School of Mathematics, SPIC Science Foundation. In 1996 The School of Mathematics became an independent institution and was renamed SPIC Mathematical Institute. Later in 1998, it was finally renamed The Chennai Mathematical Institute to reflect the emerging role of the institute.
CMI courses provide a BSc programme in two fields at the undergraduate level. At the postgraduate level, the institution offers MSc programmes in three specialisations, as well as PhD programmes in three fields.
CMI admissions to all the programmes, aspirants will have to take Chennai Mathematical Institute entrance exam. CMI was initially affiliated with the Birla Institute of Science and Technology, Pilani, and the University of Madras. CMI was recognised as a University under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956 and could award Ph.D. degrees directly from December 2006. CMI has a library, a computer lab, a dormitory, Wi-Fi, and air-conditioned classrooms.
