Mumbai University was established in 1857 as a brainchild of Wood Despatch Education. It was formerly known as the "University of Bombay". Mumbai University is among the top three oldest universities in India. The university is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of A++ and a score of 3.65 out of 4. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and granted the status of University with Potential for Excellence (UPE). Mumbai University has slipped from 81st rank in the overall category and the 45th rank in the university category in NIRF Ranking 2022 to 96th rank in the overall category and the 56th rank in the university category in NIRF Ranking 2023. Mumbai University has been ranked in the 1201–1500 band in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023.
Mumbai University has two main campuses, Vidyanagari and Fort that covers an area of 243 acres and 14 acres respectively. The university also has three sub-campuses: Ratnagiri (20 acres), Thane (6.50 acres) and Kalyan (6.26 acres), 60 departments and 749 colleges affiliated to it.

The university gives admission to certificate, diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Mumbai University admissions are offered based on marks obtained in the last qualifying exam or entrance exam scores, depending on the programme. Mumbai University admission for the year 2022-23 is closed now. However, admissions are ongoing in Mumbai University affiliated colleges. Further, Mumbai University IDOL admissions are also ongoing. IDOL is the distance learning institute of the university.
As per the Mumbai University admission notification, candidates taking admission for the first time must complete their Mumbai University pre-admission online registration for the academic year 2024.
Step 1: Candidates must visit the Mumbai University online portal- mumoa.digitaluniversity.ac to start the registration process.
Step 2: Documents that are needed at the time of the registration are passport size photograph, signature, Aadhar card, pan card, caste certificate, specially-abled certificate, SSC mark sheet, SCE mark sheet, diploma mark sheets, degree mark sheets.
Step 3: The next step is to click on ‘Register’ and fill in the details.
Step 4: Click on 'Register’, mark the checkbox and click on ‘Agree’.
Step 5: Candidates will then receive their user id and password via email and text message.
Step 6: The next step is to log in with the given user id and password to verify the Mumbai University application registration.
Step 7: Candidates can now set a new password.
Step 8: Candidates need to log in again with the given user id and new password.
Step 9: After logging in, the next step is to click on ‘Fill Profile’ and fill out the personal details, address details, education details, reservation details, occupation, and annual income, extra-curricular activities, and finally upload their photograph and signature. The information gets automatically transferred into Marathi.
Step 10: Candidates can then put in their contact details and click on 'Save and Proceed’,
Step 11: The last step is to confirm the profile. Candidates can now apply online for their respective Mumbai University courses admissions.
Every year, the university releases placement reports on its official website. Mumbai University placement report 2022 is yet to be released by the university.
