Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship is a scheme introduced to provide financial support, recognition and assistance to deserving female students who come from minority sections of the community in India. This scheme was previously known as Maulana Azad National Scholarship and was launched during the service of the then Prime Minister of India (Late) Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Hazrat Begum Mahal scholarship is a national-level scholarship that was launched in 2003 during the National Conference of Educational & Economical Development of Minorities in New Delhi.
Maulana Azad Education Foundation, a non-profit organisation supports students of minority communities to fulfill their basic right to education. As per Section 2 (c) of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992, Muslims, Jains, Christians, Parsis, Sikhs and Buddhists are classified as minority communities. Thus, this scholarship aims to offer financial assistance to meritorious female students of these communities. The selection process for the Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship is based on the merit or score of the female student in the previous class. Applicant must have scored at least 50% in the last examination and ensure that the low-income criterion of total annual family income of INR 2 Lakh is fulfilled.
Selected students will find their names in the merit lists released by the authority. However, it should be noted that state-wise and community-wise quota is fixed based on the minority population of the state as per the 2011 Census.
Each State and UT is allocated a fixed number of quotas based on the minority groups’ population in that region as per the 2011 Census. If there is a surplus quota left over in any State/ UT/Community after the merit list is declared, then its balance quota will be allocated to the same community of another State/UT.
