Tracing its origin from the French-established ‘Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry’, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) was established by French Government in 1823. It laid foundation of new medical college in 1956 followed by the inauguration of its main hospital in 1964. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GOI, categorised JIPMER as an institution of national importance.
Course-wise, the institute imparts education to students in 12 major medical, nursing and allied health science degrees across all disciplines in healthcare from basic to super speciality in its two campuses - Puducherry and Karaikal.

With a total of 1211 male students and 1277 female students, the numbers are quite fine. An equal percentage of male and female students can be seen for the PG 2-year course. JIPMER students have expressed that the majority of students belong to neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, with an equal proportion of students from Kerala and Andhra Pradesh combined with that of Tamil Nadu. Our Take:
When asked about the faculty, students have expressed that the quality of teaching is seldom compromised with the presence of both approachable and strict faculty. According to students feedback, most of the faculty and senior residents help the students during working hours. Outside working hours, they can email their doubts to the respective faculty and can expect a reply within a day or two. Administration-wise, students have shown a satisfactory response. However, discrepancies do occur but they are being resolved once addressed, they further added.
Located at Gorimedu in Puducherry, JIPMER is well-connected by road, air and train. Puducherry Airport is located at a distance of 5.6 km. At a distance of 6.6 km from the campus is the Puducherry Railway Station.

Students have voiced that the location is favourable with the most convenient option for those travelling through public transport being getting down at Jayanthi Bus Stop which is at a distance of approximately 2 km from the campus. There is easy access to shared auto or cabs from the bus stand to the campus gate.
As JIPMER claims to ‘Break Boundaries and Find Frontiers’, it is evident in its functioning. Students are happy with the infrastructural facilities available. No, the Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research does not offer direct admission to applicants. Candidates need to pass the NEET PG Exam to be eligible for admission to JIPMER Puducherry. After passing the exam, aspirants need to participate in consecutive counselling rounds. The JIPMER, Puducherry demands entrance exams for courses like MS (Surgery), PGD, MPH, MDS, MCh, PhD, DM, MD, MSc, MBBS, B.Sc etc. Various entrance exams like NEET, INI CET, JIPMER PG, JIPMER MBBS, etc are accepted by the college. JIPMER Puducherry fees range from Rs 13 to Rs 75,000 per year, based on the course chosen by candidates. The JIPMER, Puducherry NEET PG 2024 closing ranks were 277 for the general category, 591 for the OBC category, and 3630 for the SC category.

For BSc in Cardiac Laboratory Technology, the entrance exam is NEET UG, and for admission, MCC will conduct the counselling process. Keep in mind that BSc in Cardiac Laboratory Technology is a four-year UG course which is taught in a regular mode of study. JIPMER fees for this course is Rs 4800 per year. Also, there is no course called the BSc in Cardiovascular Technology at JIPMER.
