The NIT Puducherry offers four-year-long undergraduate degree courses (B.Tech) in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and 2 year-long postgraduate courses (M.Tech) in Computer Science and Engineering, Power Electronics, Communication Systems, and Design Engineering. NITPY also awards doctoral degrees to aspiring candidates in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and English.
NIT Puducherry admissions to B.Tech courses are through JEE (Mains) conducted by the National Testing Agency. It is a very competitive field to excel, and the desired candidates must pass through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling before successful admission. For admissions to M.Tech courses, one must score a good percentile in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). The GATE exam is jointly conducted by the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institutes of Technologies of Roorkee, Kharagpur, Delhi, Chennai, Guwahati, Kanpur, and Mumbai under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. The final admission is through the Centralized Counseling for M.Tech (CCMT) scheme. NITPY also gives international and NRI students a chance through the Direct Admission for Students Abroad (DASA) scheme.
The institute follows a reservation policy, where 27% of the seats are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 10 % for the economically poor sections, 15% for Scheduled castes (SCs) and 7.5 % for the Scheduled castes (SCs), as announced by the Supreme Court of India. Also, for the undergraduate courses, 50% of the seats are allocated to students who are the residents or natives of the Union Territory of Puducherry (including Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam) and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It also offers scholarship programmes to enrol PhD needy students in undergraduate courses. These scholarships are looked into by the MHRD cell, Government of India.
