Central University of Tamil Nadu or CUTN is a premier institute of higher education established through an Act of Parliament in 2009, the The university is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with B++ grade. As per NIRF Ranking 2022, the university secured 85th position in the university category.
As of 2023, Central University of Tamil Nadu has 12 schools, 27 departments offering 62 courses at UG and PG level. Admission to CUTN courses is based on the CUET for master’s and integrated masters courses. Whereas for CUTN admission to PhD courses require candidates to qualify for National Level Fellowship Examinations like JRF (UGC/CSIR/DBT/ICMR/ICAR), NET (UGC/CSIR), GATE or equivalent. The university currently functions from its permanent campus at Neelakudi, Thiruvarur. CUTN campus is spread over an area of 250 acres.

The seat intake of PhD and M.Phil programmes at Central University of Tamil Nadu varies department wise. The exact intake is decided on the basis of availability of guides and effectiveness of the research topics during the PI or GD. The fee structure ranges from Rs 18,000 to Rs 19,000 per year.

Every year, Central University of Tamil Nadu placements are conducted by its placement cell. Central University of Tamil Nadu cut off is for different for each course.Applicants for CUET courses are shortlisted based on their CUET score. Multiple counseling sessions are conducted for the final selection. CUTN cut off for B.Sc.B.Ed is 140 for general, 40 for OBC, 70 for SC and 103 for EWS for 2022-23. For Applied Psychology, CUTN cut off is 139 for general, 148 for OBC (NCL) ,108 for SC and 46 for SC. Central University of Tamil Nadu Campus was allotted 516.76 acres of land by the Government of Tamil Nadu in two revenue villages of Neelakudi and Nagakudi. The academic campus was shifted to Neelakudi village (412.03 acres) and residential campus in the Nagakudi village (104.73 acres). Construction works commenced from April 2010 onwards and CUTN campus was permanently shifted in the year 2013.
The university consists of 200 hostels (boys and girls) and a well-equipped library. CUTN Central Library is well equipped with modern facilities and resources.
