The university boasts of stable rankings, a diverse range of courses, adequate facilities, a healthy gender ratio, and research facilities. Our Take:
Burdwan University has jumped one position in the NIRF rankings in 2023 from 2022, which is good. However, the rank dropped 2 positions between 2021 and 2022. The ups and downs in the rankings show the constant effort of the university to maintain its position.
Burdwan University follows a Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS), which includes open electives to give students the opportunity to explore their interests beyond their core subjects. The university follows a semester system, and assessment is done in the form of grades. However, student reviews of its alumni state that the curriculum of Burdwan University courses is outdated and lacks exposure.

Our Take:
Burdwan University lacks an updated curriculum and exposure opportunities for its students. This reflects the university’s lack of commitment to student’s overall development. It deprives students of the opportunity to develop skills, learn, and grow. However, it is also commendable that the university has implemented the latest academic reforms like CBCS and others, testifying to its efforts for academic excellence.
Burdwan University boasts a well-developed infrastructure, including a huge library, hostel, laboratories, auditorium, seminar halls, and canteen facilities. However, according to the student reviews on Quora, the infrastructure of Burdwan University is not well maintained.
BU has basic classrooms with proper ventilation and light. Some are also ICT-enabled for better classroom experience.
BU has a large auditorium with a capacity of 1,200 students. Also, multiple seminar halls and laboratories are available on campus. As per the students, improvement in lab facilities is required in various departments.
The University of Burdwan boasts of sports facilities available on campus. As per the Yearly Status Report 2021, the campus has a sports complex with playgrounds and courts for football, basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho, etc. It also has a gym and a yoga centre. However, students complain about the lack of sports equipment.
Burdwan University has hostel facilities for boys and girls. As per students, the hostel charges are very affordable at only INR 600 per month. However, the quality of food provided is average in taste and nutrition.
A few sports and cultural activities are held at BU. But the students say that the university lacks in conducting enough co-curricular activities, events, and fests.
The University of Burdwan has a central canteen and multiple canteens in different departments. The food quality at canteens is good. Moreover, the vicinity has various hangout places, such as restaurants, temples, and parks.
Our Take:
Burdwan University has a well-developed infrastructure but lacks maintenance. It is true that over the years, the university has been invested in improving its infrastructure for a better student experience. However, not enough maintenance defeats the entire purpose. Also, enhancements in terms of food quality in hostels and extracurricular activities are required.
The University of Burdwan hasn’t provided any official report regarding the internship opportunities offered to the students. According to the students’ feedback, the university hardly invites any recruiters for internships. Around 25 to 80% of students across various courses completed their internship programme. However, most of them looked for opportunities by themselves.
According to the NIRF 2023 report, 90% of students in PG (2-year) courses were placed in 2022. Whereas the placement percentage for UG (3-year) courses was only 56%. The average package offered across courses ranged from INR 1.52 LPA to INR 2.39 LPA.

Our Take:
While the placement percentage is better for PG programmes, it's just average for UG courses. On top of that, the median salary is critically low. Most of the time, either students do not receive any placement opportunities or they have to search for off-campus placements on their own. This makes the university quite unsuitable for career-oriented students. It is evident that Burdwan University needs to provide better placement and internship opportunities.
The university claims to promote ethnic, social, religious, and cultural diversity. However, students on Quora reported too much presence of party politics on campus. Furthermore, almost 100% of students hail from West Bengal, proving that the university’s presence is limited to the home state only. However, BU has a good gender representation, with 60% female students.

Our Take:
Too much party politics doesn’t represent a good image of the university. Proper measures should be taken to bring down the involvement of the student body in the politics of parties. On the other hand, the university has a good image among female students, as they represent almost 60% of the university's student body. This proves how careful the university is about making the campus safe for its feamle students. However, the university lacks non-domicile students. It has a lot of scope for improvement on that front.
According to the NIRF 2023 report, Burdwan University has 233 regular and contractual faculty. The majority of the faculty members are PhD holders. As per student reviews, most teachers are highly qualified and helpful. However, a few are arrogant, underqualified, and inexperienced. Also, the available faculty is less than the student strength, as per students. Moreover, a few students have highlighted that assessment is very strict at BU. The failure rate is much higher than the pass rate.
Furthermore, reviews by BU alumni suggest that the administration and management of the university are totally irresponsible. Various incidents related to the mismanagement of checking answer sheets have occurred. Delays in the result announcement, mark sheet release, and TC/CC release have been encountered by the alumni and students.
Our Take:
Burdwan University has a majority of qualified and student-friendly faculty, but there are some unprofessional teachers as well. Additionally, the management at Burdwan University is not very efficient, especially when it comes to examinations, assessments, and the release of results. The delay in result publication has been constant for years now. This creates a negative image of the university’s management and might impact Burdwan University admission in the coming years.
University of Burdwan is located in Burdwan Rajbati Raiganj, Burdwan, West Bengal. It’s a suburban region surrounded by lush greenery. It is easily accessible by local transportation, train, and aeroplane.
Burdwan University has a strong regional presence and serves thousands of local students. However, it fails to attract students from other states. It provides facilities and opportunities proportional to the fees it charges. Students with low economic backgrounds and average academic records can look for Burdwan University. However, students looking for better opportunities and exposure must look for other options.
