Since 1967, Gargi College has empowered women with a top-notch education, establishing itself as a leading college in India. It is a constituent college of the University of Delhi recognised by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an ‘A+’ grade. The college is well known for its academic offerings at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Arts, Science, and Commerce streams. Also, to encourage students towards research and innovation, it has developed an infrastructure facility for 'Bioinformatics' and started ‘The Gargi Pathfinder Award’.

The student population is highly diverse, including more than 70% of students from across the country, creating a culturally rich environment. While the college is considered safe for women, not all is rosy here! Several past incidents related to molestation and sexual harassment have raised eyebrows about the safety and security of the students at Gargi College.

Our Take:

Gargi College is one of the leading and most sought-after colleges for arts and science in India. Getting ranked in the 31st position by NIRF demonstrates its strength in education and research. Despite its legacy of academic excellence, the college has witnessed a steady drop in its rankings, slipping by 8 positions in 2023 and by 7 positions in 2022. There can be a plethora of reasons to counter this trend. Although it seems, Gargi College has the potential to overcome its weaknesses and outshine once again!

• Gargi College offers a wide range of UG and PG courses in Humanities, Commerce, and Science, allowing students to pursue their chosen field of study. 
• As per research on multiple forums, students were found to be satisfied with the holistic curriculum and pedagogy used at Gargi College. The rounded curriculum represents its academic excellence and dedication to education. Students have also stated that the fee structure of the college is also quite affordable, especially given its reputation as a leading south campus college under DU.

Gargi College Infrastructure 

The campus of Gargi College spreads over 13 acres of lush green area, featuring well-built infrastructure amongst diverse flora and fauna. Let’s explore the infrastructure and amenities offered by the college below. 

Library:

Gargi College has a well-stocked central library with a collection of 76,946 books and other reading materials. The library offers several facilities, such as a reading room, Web-OPAC, UGC-Inflibnet, and access to DULS e-resources. 

Laboratories:

The college has state-of-the-art laboratories for all the departments. The labs are not only spacious and well-ventilated but also well-equipped with the latest equipment, internet facilities and other academic resources. 

Auditorium/ Seminar Halls:

The college has a large and spacious auditorium with a seating capacity of 750. Adjoining the auditorium is a seminar hall with a seating capacity of 125. Both are equipped with air-conditioning and ICT facilities. The university has recently added an open-air stage in its infrastructure for conducting various events.  

Internet:

A high-speed wireless internet facility is available across the campus of Gargi College. However, issues related to seamless internet access are an institutional weakness due to its location in a VIP area with jammers, resulting in restricted Wi-Fi connectivity. 

Activities:

Our Take:

Overall, the infrastructure and facilities of Gargi College are highly impressive! The campus provides well-equipped laboratories, a library, an auditorium, a seminar hall, a canteen, a cafe and many other recreational facilities. On the other hand, hostel facilities are not offered by the college, but there are enough PG facilities around the campus. 

Apart from that, Gargi College provides a vibrant student environment to learn and grow. The plethora of student societies provides huge opportunities for students to develop their skills and potential. On top of that, the amazing hangout spots are the ultimate treat!

• Gargi College has an active placement cell which not only provides the best opportunities but also trains students throughout the year to make them job-ready. 
• Based on our analysis, students have expressed satisfaction with the placement outcomes of Gargi College. In fact, the highest package offered in 2023 stood at INR 21.50 LPA. It represents the college’s dedication to providing better opportunities to students in leading companies. 
• We have also observed an upward trend in average salary packages over the past few years which is highly beneficial for students and the institution.

Our Take: 

The student population of Gargi College represents an impressive inter-state diversity with more than 72.5% of students hailing from outside Delhi. The crowd is just amazing creating an ecosystem of different cultures, religions, and castes. However, the college lacks global diversity with only 0.3% of international students. It should take some initiatives to attract more foreign students. 

Overall, the campus is pretty diverse and culturally rich. However, being a women’s college poses some restrictions in the overall development of students. 

Gargi College Faculty/College Administration & Management

Gargi College is home to some of the finest and highly talented faculty in the country. According to the SSR 2022 report, the college has 216 permanent faculty members with 71% of them holding PhD degrees. Additionally, there are 80 temporary and 15 guest faculty members. 

On online forums, students and alumni of Gargi College have expressed positive feedback about the faculty of the college. According to them, the teachers are highly qualified, disciplined and hardworking. They are friendly and supportive towards the students and guide them in personal and professional areas.  

While looking towards the administration and management of Gargi College, incidents related to molestation during the annual fest caught our attention. Students protested and demanded action from the administration for failing to protect them. In return, the administration put time restrictions on the fest from the next year instead of providing tight security. This raises several questions about the ability of the administration and management of Gargi College.

Our Take:

While Gargi College’s faculty, administration and management are well-qualified and efficient, their silence towards harassment and security breaches raised concerns. Female students diligently choose women’s colleges for the sake of safety and it is the responsibility of the management and administration to ensure the security of students at any cost. Instead of restricting fest timing, the college should have come up with better security measures. 

Gargi College Location

Gargi College is located in the capital city of India at Siri Fort Road, New Delhi. The college is situated in one of the posh areas of South Delhi well-connected via roads, railways and airways. It is about 12 km away from the New Delhi Airport and Railway Station. Green Park is the nearest metro station from where one can easily reach the campus by walking. 

Moreover, Gargi College’s prime location in south Delhi, amidst Saket, Sarojini Nagar and Lajpat Nagar, is a feast for female students. From trendy cafes to bustling markets, south Delhi provides a stimulating backdrop to college life.

Indeed! Gargi College is one of the most sought-after women’s colleges in India. Its robust curriculum, affordable fees, experienced faculty, and ample exposure opportunities attract students from across the country. Along with that, Gargi College provides sufficient internship and placement opportunities helping students get jobs in leading MNCs.  

While the college offers holistic education and adequate career opportunities, concerns about safety and silent management remain paramount. The management has taken several measures to curb these challenges but whether those measures are enough is a big question in itself.
