Established in February 1982, Bharathidasan University was named after the great revolutionary Tamil poet, Bharathidasan. The university's motto, "We will create a brave new world," is based on the words of Bharathidasan's poem. The university was recognised by UGC on November 26, 1984. As per the NIRF ranking 2023 under the “University” category, the Bharathidasan University stands in the 41st position. The university is also accredited with A+ grade. It has 432 acres of main campus in semi-urban area and 39.99 acres of land in Khajamalai Campus. The university has 24 autonomous colleges, 122 non-autonomous colleges, 11 approved institutions, and 01 uni-faculty institution affiliated to it. The university includes research centres, academic departments, Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre, Women's Studies, Educational Technology, and more. 

With 39 departments, 29 Specialized Research Centres, 16 Schools, and 4 faculties, the university has 263 faculty members.  In addition, there is a supporting staff of 457 members. The university offers 151 courses, among which 42 are PG courses. The students can also pursue certificate, diploma, bachelor’s, and doctorate from the university. Besides providing quality education, the university also focuses on placement of students. The university has good association with the leading organizations such as ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, LIC, SBI Life and more. 

Students of Bharathidasan University receive financial aid in the form of loans and scholarships. Bharathidasan University Scholarships are provided to deserving and needy students. There are different categories for scholarship. The scholarship varies on the basis of family income, category, and attendance of students. Check the eligibility criteria described below and apply for the scholarship accordingly:

• Post-matric scholarship: Bharathidasan University scholarships for post-matriculation are available to BC MBC students who have attained a minimum attendance rate of 75% and whose family income does not exceed 1 lakh per year.
• Special loan scholarship: This scholarship is offered to SC and ST students who are residing in the university's dorms and whose family income does not exceed $50,000.
• Scholarship offered by the Indian Government: To be eligible, parents in the SC and ST categories must have yearly incomes of no more than Rs 1,00,000 and Rs 1,08,000, respectively. Besides this students must have completed a minimum of 75% of their attendance.
