Merit-cum-Means (MCM) Scholarships are aimed at extending financial support to students who are meritorious, but are from an economically weak background. MCM Scholarship is awarded to a maximum of 25% of the enrolled students in the undergraduate program. A minimum CPI of 6.5 (Except 1st year) whose parents’ annual income is not more than Rs. 4,50,000/- can apply for this scholarship. The decision to award the scholarship is taken by the Senate Scholarship and Prize Committee after interviewing all the applicants. All the awardees are eligible for Rs. 1,000/- p.m. for ten months plus exemption from payment of annual tuition fees.
IITGN offers freeships to students who are not eligible for MCM Scholarships. The main objective of this scholarship is to support financially weak students. The general and OBC category of students are eligible for this scholarship. This scholarship is available to additional 10% of the students who do not qualify or could not be awarded MCM. The final decision to award the scholarship is taken by the Senate Scholarship and Prize Committee after interviewing all the applicants. All the awardees are normally exempted from payment of annual tuition fee. However, the committee could decide to waive the tuition fee only for a semester and revisit the decision based on the academic performance of the student. The scholarships expire at the end of academic year.
Free basic messing and pocket allowance of Rs. 250 is awarded to all SC/ST students whose parents' annual income is not more than Rs. 4,50,000. The scholarships expire at the end of academic year.
This scholarship is awarded to the students who secure the highest CPI in their respective discipline every year. All the awardees are eligible for Rs. 2,000/- p.m. for ten months. However, if the student is also a MCM/freeship/Free Basic Messing and Pocket Allowance awardee, then the student is only eligible for a one-time receipt of Rs. 5000/-. The scholarships expire at the end of academic year.
Six scholarships are instituted to encourage excellence in sports and games. II, III & IV year undergraduate students are eligible for this scholarship. The SSPC interviews all the applicants to decide the awardees. All the awardees are eligible for Rs. 2,000/- p.m. for ten months. Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar is an institution that not only focuses on disseminating knowledge from the very basic level to help students grow in a better way but also helps them with financial support so that they may grow without any financial restraints. The IIT Gandhinagar scholarships are available on the basis of merit – cum – means (MCM) values for selected students of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The motive of providing scholarships is to promote students to perform well in their academics and maintain their academic track in order to continue receiving the scholarships offered at a regular basis.
A number of scholarships are available to justify equality among students. Few of these scholarships are awarded by the institution and few from outside sources. These IIT Gandhinagar scholarships have been divided into sections on the basis of the donors initiating the scholarships. Two broad classifications have been made that comprise Scholarships Instituted by IIT Gandhinagar and Scholarships Instituted by Donors. Both types of scholarships work on the formula of MCM values to select right and worthy students for awarding the scholarships.
These scholarships work on the MCM formula to dig out the students apt for the scholarships. There are basically five different types of scholarships in this category. These have been segregated on the basis of the co-curricular and academic activities performed by the students of the institution. The amount awarded through these scholarships are decided by the concerned authorities of the institution and bar far has remained fixed for all five sections. Details of these five Scholarships Instituted by IIT Gandhinagar are as follows:
Scholarship for Academic Excellence: The scholarships of this category are awarded to the students who excel in their academics. Students with the highest CPI in their respective disciplines are considered to be eligible for this scholarship. A sum of Rs 2,000 per month for the next ten months is granted to the selected students. It is to note that a sum of Rs 5,000 will be given to the students who have successfully acquired more than one scholarship of same or higher weightage.
Scholarship for Excellence in Sports and Games: Scholarships of this category are awarded to the ones who have excelled in the sports and games. Six selected students will get this IIT Gandhinagar scholarship. Second, third and fourth-year students can apply for this scholarship. Each recipient of this scholarship will be given a sum of Rs 2,000 per month for ten consecutive months. A sum of Rs 5,000 will be awarded to the recipients who qualify for more than one scholarship of same or higher rank.
Scholarship for Excellence in Arts and Culture: A sum of Rs 2,000 will be given to the students who will qualify for this scholarship. This amount shall be applicable for a tenure of ten months for the recipient of scholarships. Students will be judged on the basis of their performance in the Arts and Culture stream. Students with add on scholarships of equal or higher values will be eligible for a sum of Rs 5,000 awarded by the institution.
Scholarship for Excellence in Social Work and Leadership: Scholarships of Rs 2,000 per month for the next ten months will be given to the students excelling in the field of social work and leadership. Recipient of more than one scholarships of similar or higher values will be provided with a sum of Rs 5,000 as the scholarship amount.
Merit – cum – Means Scholarships: As the name suggests, these scholarships will be given on the basis of both merit and means of the students of different disciplines of the institution. The financial background of such students will be closely monitored and then the scholarship will be disseminated to such students. As per the official documentation, the scholarship shall be given to the students with annual family income not more than Rs. 4.5 lakhs with a minimum CPI of 6.5 during the preceding academic year. A stipend of Rs 1,000 per month for ten months with a full tuition fee waiver for the current academic year will be given to the recipient of this scholarship. A total of 25% enrolled students in the undergraduate programmes (up to 2015 batch only) shall avail this scholarship.
